Race for the Galaxy - PBF Game #17.

-------------------
GAME FINISHED

Clickthrough to the geeklist (unless you're Wei-Hwa!)

Be sure the first thing you do is click subscribe!

-------------------

How it works
I am going to moderate a 2pa game of RftG through Keldon's AI 0.8.1k. It will be one BGG forum team against Wei-Hwa Huang, whose credits for RftG include "original graphics and development assistance".

Players may join at any time in the game
Come and go as you wish. It goes without saying that Wei-Hwa will not look at our geeklist during the game. This thread, however is open for public discussion, so watch what you say during the game.

Some detail on how the game functions
In the geeklist please explain why you want to take your action. Strategy discussion is highly encouraged. To avoid groupthink, please put your first strategy reply to a decision point behind spoiler [ o] tags. Ideally also post before reading replies to the current decision point (yes it's scary, but everyone is a lot more likely to learn something that way.)

I am going to use posts and thumbing comments as the voting system. Your thumbs override your posts if there is a contradiction. Remember thumbs can be removed, so you can change your mind. Majority vote wins.

This game basically works like a play by email game so expect game choice/actions/forward motion to be between 0-7 per day. This game will play over the weekend. Expect the game to last 2-4 weeks.

The Fine Print.
-If a bug occurs with the software, it stands and the game moves on.
-If we misclick, the misclick stands as there's no undo in online play.
-The captain will be playing as well - this is not nearly as fun for me if i can only spectate.
-Captain vote will be used to break ties (in the unlikely event this occurs.)
-Trivial decisions (such as final turn guaranteed win) may be fastforwarded in the interests of playing more games.

Except that Kasparov admitted after the match that he peeked at the forum doing strategy analysis.

I liked the part how the World Team started flaming each other in the forums when they started losing...

Let's see how true-to-life this re-enactment becomes!

I'm tempted to learn the rules of RftG so I can troll by voting for astoundingly weak moves, but this is Wei-Hwa Huang we're talking about, and as a fellow connoisseur of logic puzzles, I respect him too much to make this game less challenging for him in such a fashion. Good luck, world!

Also, it wasn't such a good environment for "The World". The original idea was for the four young commentators to give their individual recommendations, and for everyone else to read the four commentaries and vote for a move. That's not collaboration, and would have led to a much worse loss, but as it happened, Microsoft also included a discussion forum on the website, almost as an afterthought, and that got pressed into service as a place for people to work on the game together. Still, only two of the four commentators spent an appreciable amount of time on the forum, and when Microsoft noticed that they had been talking to each other, they were asked not to consult with each other on their moves (!) It is likely that most of the "World" voters never looked at the forum.

Nicely done. It was pretty clear I was already on the ropes when Federation Capital came out. On the penultimate turn, I knew I basically needed a miraculous draw that would get me the Greatest Military goal and that I needed to get one more turn, neither of which happened.

I'm up for another game, but I'll be in Berlin next week for the International Puzzle Party and I don't know how much Internet access I'll have. :-)

Thanks for playing! I'm a bit disappointed BGG got such good draws, as it was a bit of a walkover.

By the way, who's regarded the top player at the moment?

I'm not sure such a thing can be definitively determined, but the last time rftgstats.com was up and updated, a player named pyhuang was at the top. Not sure why the main page doesn't work, but the personal pages do. I checked bgg pyhuang and he hasn't logged in in 5+ years.

I remember being beaten 6 times in a row by Kesterer - it opened my eyes to the depth of the game and nudged me into playing it (a bit) more seriously.

By the way, did you (Rob) win a tournament sometime?

T1: I find it interesting that he didn't settle/trade or dev/trade with that starting hand, opting instead to give us an explore with our +1 look. Perhaps he's hoping for a free good off our likely settle/produce. But then he set/trade the next turn nullifying the free good anyway, eaten by Epsilon Eridani.

T2: heh alien strat just really fell into his lap.

T5: i find his discard to produce of Imperium Cloaking Technology strange. He kept 5 worlds no devs (for the goals i guess), including Secluded World and Mining Mole Uplift Race. At this point we could easily left turn and dev/dev drawing 2 per phase and he'd have had to skip both!

T8: i wonder if he noticed the game was going to end on 15 PP, cuz it looked like the vp pool would end at 1 this turn...

Epsilon Eridani eating the good doesn't nullify the good because there's a card in its consumption.

Well, *some* strategy has to fall into my lap sooner or later. I was not particularly happy to see it being the alien strat because it requires a lot of cash which means I have to give up my main lead (tempo) to execute it.

If my opponent chooses to dev/dev next turn I'm not getting the most-developments goal anyway. I felt it was marginally better to have the flexibility of Settle/Produce than to put out a development I'm unlikely to ever use.

The game only ends on 15PP if my opponent chooses Consume. Again, I know I can't win if my opponent chooses Consume, so I have to play as if they are going to not choose it.

Right but then what's the benefit of E+1/D over S/$ then? Just for that extra 1vp1c when the opponent produces T1? I guess i could see that, but it seems like a pretty big sacrifice when the opponent doesn't have the T1 produce. I know most ppl seem to like BoW Doomed World more than me, which means most ppl would not be producing T1 with it.

Oh i didn't mean you got lucky, i meant that part played itself, for better or worse. It was interesting that you also had a distracting brown path appear there.
