Just curious: why does this expansion come with 30 damage chits? Did the base game not come with sufficiently many damage chits?

Probably because they had unused space on a stock-sized cardboard punch sheet and figured it would be better to use some of that space for more of the most commonly-used (and commonly-lost / destroyed / damaged) counters rather than just have a large section of unused cardboard.

If you'll pardon the thread necromancy...

I like to color-code my damage when I play. Not that it makes any difference whatsoever in terms of game rules, but I use the red damage chits to indicate damage I took from other robots, and green damage chits for damage from the board itself.

But that's just my own neurotic tendency.
