It covers the case when you grabbed the top card of your discard pile with the intent to play it...but in the meantime your opponent played to make your intended play impossible or ill-advised.

So you put the card back down in the discard pile before you start flipping more cards from your deck looking for a play.

This often happens in real-time mode for the game.

But just to specify, when taking a card from your discard pile, you are only allowed to draw the top card. (You can then play it, or put it back down on top.) You may never search the discard pile.
