A Chit Chat thread I just saw alerted me that Cartoon Network has done a reboot of an old TV series from the 1980's called Thundercats. In truth, I only watched a few minutes of one or two episodes of the original program; frankly it creeped me out.

Although I did not have the words for it then, in retrospect I realize that it struck me as a mild form of homoerotic borderline porn akin to He-man.

So, that He-man was creepy homoerotic borderline porn is beyond question. After mentioning my impression of Thundercats to my wife, I'm led to question whether my impression of the latter program (as thin plots involving lots of near-naked over-muscled men running around showing off their physiques for no discernible reason) is accurate.

My wife agrees that the characters were near naked and the plots were thin, but she seems to recall female characters-- or one at least.

What do people think?

I am proud to have opposed those who describe all who oppose them as "Tender Flowers" and "Special Snowflakes".

The show that launched a thousand furries?

No idea what you're talking about.

I'm not going to look for a link to explain "furry" to anyone who doesn't already know. That's best left as an exercise for the reader.

Near naked? In the pilot of the original cartoon they WERE naked. They didn't adopt clothing until they crashed on Earth.

Also - CHEETARAH!

Ah yes, Thundercats!

Story time:

My brother and I used to compete every morning to see who could wake up the earliest (unaided by alarm clocks or anything of the sort) and not miss any of the morning cartoons.
Through sheer will power we were somehow able to train our bodies over several months to wake up earlier and earlier. Cartoons started at 5 am and sometimes the winner would be up and waiting before 4.

Waking up first was only half the battle. Go Joe! When I woke up first I would ever so slowly creep out of bed and then out of the bedroom attempting to not wake my brother. We were in bunkbeds together so I had to be very quiet and careful. We were so well trained that the slightest noise would rouse the other. It would take me five minutes or so just to get out of bed and out of the room. Silently closing the door was quite the chore.

The victory was so sweet as my brother rushed out of the room at 5:20 having missed the first 20 minutes of Brave Star! After that Thundercats started at 5:30, Heathcliff and The Snorks filled the 6 o'clock hour and then it was The Brady Bunch followed by The Monkees.

Those were the days.

Never watched TC, but did watch He-man occasionally. I have never considered this homo-erotic. There are more cartoons with 'over-muscled near-naked men running around'. Many male actors show off six-packs and well-developed muscles. Come to think of it, many actresses show off the 'ideal' feminine figure, even rebuild (parts of) their body to conform to this ideal. Nobody has a problem with that, I guess.

But let's stick to the homo-erotic. I can surely see why this would be a problem in the US of A, but why would you even begin to relate a cartoon to homo-eroticism? Does this not say more about you than about the reality of the thing? Today's (Western) society emphasises very much youth and the well-build, healthy body associated with youth. Could it not be, that this is the reason for well-muscled bodies, in cartoons or elsewhere?
The 'ideal' body changes with time. I recently watched the movie The thing from the black lagoon. a 50's movie, where men where walking around in only shorts and women where fairly well covered up, surely compared to today's standard on showing the human body. In those times homo-erotic was not something people associated with the naked male body...

It was more camp then Charles Hawltery drinking a cup of coffee.

Where did I saw anything was a problem? I just said it creeped me out and I didn't want to watch it. Did I say no one else should?

I'd point out that you seem awfully defensive about this issue.

Then why was the quote you included relevant?

You shouldn't be surprised when people get defensive after you start out on the attack.

How is the OP an "attack"?

You compared a children's cartoon to borderline homoerotic porn.

Perhaps when your child is old enough to enjoy such cartoons, you'll understand.

I'm not concerned about the TV program. I'm concerned that someone said my child watches porn.

I am going to avoid the obvious snide remark here.

He did not say your child watches porn (as far as I am aware he never mentioned any of your family. He said that he remembers the show as disturbingly homoerotic (muscle bound men in tight revealing costumes, how could any one think that might have homoerotic overtones?). You seem to have taken this far to personally.

I am concerned you let him or her watch violent drivel with no story line or plot. With two-dimensional wooden characters and such a two black and white of morality that it’s a joke.

He never said your kids whatched homoerotic porn, If I may demonstrate, why are you allowing your children to watch homoerotic porn?, essentially that is what you are doing. Taking what he has written and made it a personal assumption about you and your family. Let me ask you a question, if a baby sitter turned up dressed in a skin tight, crotch hugging leotard and said “I’m here to take good care of your kids” would you think that was a good thing, or would you get another babysitter?

Oh, please.

How is this appropriate for children? Frankly I don't much care either way (see my "I don't own a TV" microbadge) but the two programs mentioned in the OP have thin plots, unnecessarily and unrealistically naked characters with exaggerated physiques which look like a professional weight-lifter's pipe dream.

How is this not as vapid and inappropriate for children as the Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit edition? and yes, for the record, I do regard that as light or borderline porn.
