[major differences from previous PBF in red]

Race for the Galaxy - PBF Game #18.

-------------------
GAME FINISHED

Clickthrough to the geeklist (unless you're Rob!)

Be sure the first thing you do is click subscribe!

-------------------

How it works
I am going to moderate a 2pa game of RftG through Keldon's AI 0.8.1k. It will be one BGG forum team against Rob Renaud, WBC RftG winner and well-known expert of the game.

Players may join at any time in the game
Come and go as you wish. It goes without saying that Rob will not look at our geeklist during the game. This thread, however is open for public discussion, so watch what you say during the game.

Some detail on how the game functions
In the geeklist please explain why you want to take your action. Strategy discussion is highly encouraged. To avoid groupthink, please put your first strategy reply to a decision point behind spoiler [ o] tags. Ideally also post before reading replies to the current decision point (yes it's scary, but everyone is a lot more likely to learn something that way.)

I am going to use posts and thumbing comments as the voting system. Your thumbs override your posts if there is a contradiction. Remember thumbs can be removed, so you can change your mind. Majority vote wins.

This game basically works like a play by email game so expect game choice/actions/forward motion to be between 1-4 per day. This game will play over the weekend. Expect the game to last 1 week.

The Fine Print.
-If a bug occurs with the software, it stands and the game moves on.
-If we misclick, the misclick stands as there's no undo in online play.
-The captain will be playing as well - this is not nearly as fun for me if i can only spectate.
-Captain vote will be used to break ties (in the unlikely event this occurs.)
-Trivial decisions (such as final turn guaranteed win) may be fastforwarded in the interests of playing more games.

There have been some hotly debated decisions. If the vote is really close, sometimes our fearless leader gives it an extra hour or two to see if anybody changes their mind or comes along to tip the scales.

But for all we know, you're the one holding us up.

Don't worry. If the group seems to be reaching a consensus, I like to sneak in and argue for a different decision to prolong each turn. It's lots of fun.

TBH the reason this game has been so slow is on Rob's end imo. :P He seems to have more of a regular schedule, rather than being able to update the moment we update.

On the length of the game, in Rob's defense, i was waiting until he had 2 decisions queued up before pinging him. I thought it would save time and effort on his side, but with a semi-regular schedule i think it actually was adding time. E.g. if he just likely went to sleep when i had waited to queue up 2 decisions.

I am interested in the breakdown of how many people thought I would consume 2x/prod vs trade/prod.

This topic was not really discussed because everybody assumed that you would consume/produce anyway (probably almost everybody implicitly assumed that it would be consume x2).

gg.

I was surprised at how well the GPB and Galactic markets devs as pseudo rare goods thing worked early. I was naked. If you guys pulled a turn 2 settle/settle I would have been hopelessly screwed, I would have missed both settles and still had no real source of card flow. Your trade really bailed me out.

The turn 4 settle/settle was super ballsy on your part after the mutual turn 3 settle/settle, I thought that could have backfired badly if I called prod a turn earlier (of course, I don't know, maybe you guys had something like black hole miners to leach it the prod?).

Thanks entranced for hosting this PBF. There is tremendous amount of work. He is incredibly patient on us.

To be honest, I've never been able to read Tom's super-analysis in full. It hurts my brain pretty bad.

Before seeing the log from your side, the one thing i was curious about was why T3 you chose III/III with 5c into an 8c military tableau. I mean i have good guesses, but just wondering.

Turns out the length of the game was due to a few factors. Here we had 25% more decision points than vs onigame. Tom took this pbf to the next level with extremely detailed, high density scenario analysis in most decision points. We also had many highly contested decisions, the game didn't play itself as much as vs onigame.

It's nowhere near as much work as it seems. We've streamlined the process tremendously. What's way way more work and straining my time is actually participating in the game itself hah.

Early settles vs (even big) military are fine if I have production worlds to settle and consume powers already built. Consume goods for points powers are mostly useless without goods to consume.

Calling Trade there hotly contested ... I think there are like 50+ posts about that one decision

I did really like the use of prestige for cards; it's one of the BoW tactics that I haven't really used much.

My god, 52 comments on one decision point?

I probably would have argued for a settle/settle if we had rebel warrior race instead of the alien windfall, but eating an alien good for two cards seemed bad at the time and reasonably likely given that a one military windfall seemed possible. It's amusing how we were fighting between three options and settle/settle was none of those.

Did you have a thought on the starting world selection (without hindsight)?

Did you have a thought on the starting world selection (without hindsight)?

I think UMF is fine. I like search/settle, hunting for an uplift. The chance that you don't get a green windfall is low enough that I'll do it blind. First turn ravaged uplift world is pretty awesome (not quite as awesome as the AI thinks), especially as UMF.

So, Rob was sitting on Alien Toy Shop. If we dev/settle, instead of dev/Cx2, on the final turn, Rob wins. In that case:

Rob gets 8 ATS (including its Cx3 VPs and PGH) + 3 GE (3rd kind) = +11
We get +6 RU -1 consume (no Cx2) = +5

Rob goes from 66 (final) to 77
We go from 71 (final) to 76; Rob wins

Very close... it definitely felt, to others as well as myself, that Settle was too dangerous for us

Thanks, Serge, for doing this. Thanks to Rob for being (mostly) patient with us! ;-)

Thanks to everyone on the forum who made such good suggestions. For example, I was over-ruled on Rebel Troops vs Merc Fleet... without the extra card flow from Rebel Troops, we're down several VPs for sure and have a much harder time of it during the final rounds! ;-)

This was a lot of fun, but I suspect I'll do it only once again (as an opponent), probably some time in Sept. (I'm currently at WorldCon after driving up and doing a panel today and then have to fly to DC for personal reasons -- my father's health is rapidly declining and we're all getting together for what is quite likely to be his final B-day -- shortly afterwards.) I should be back after Labor Day.

What this reminded me of was my old PBEMail days from the late eighties (I helped co-develop one of the very first completely computer automated PBEM games, Phoenix, with Don Woods and Steven Goodman). I found I can't play PBEM games -- I get too wrapped up in them. So, I'll play once more in the forum as your opponent, but I will bow out on future forum games.

Thanks to all my forum team-mates who politely put up with me (and my frequent edits) this time around!

Take care, everyone!
