I recently played That's Life! at our monthly game day and really enjoyed it. It's a nice filler, heavily luck-based but with some tense decisions throughout.

Two things dismayed me about the game, however. First, its out-of-print status (and the fact that the expansions are not available in the US, period). And second, its fairly unpleasant and unthematic art. Here, take a gander.

Not only is it fugly, it also doesn't make much sense. In thinking about a redesign that would fit the mechanics of the game better, I thought of the old 8-bit Mario side-scrollers. Each sequence of positive or negative tiles could be an entire level from the game; the shamrock tiles could be 1-up tiles; the racing / leap-frog mechanics of the game would fit very well with the side-scroller theme; and I just dig the retro feel of 8-bit graphics and art.

Here are some initial mock-ups I did of the tiles and player pawns. Pretty simple design so far, especially since the 8-bit graphics lend themselves to clean, uncluttered design.

Would love to hear your thoughts, comments, suggestions, etc.

I don't know the game, but would play it just for the Mario theme.

Sweet. If you search around in reviews, rules and variants forums you'll probably find out all the details you need for the expansions. You'll want to figure out something for the red and green hats, possibly some 'reroll' tokens and some half-red & half-green tiles.

I've played this with Icehouse pieces and a sticheln deck with success but a nicely done retheme like this would get me rummaging for those sticker sheets.

Yeah, I've already gathered all the expansion rules and what-not, but the one thing I was stuck on was how to implement the hats. Not sure how to do that with cardboard standups... any suggestions would be great.

Maybe a circular token with a slot cut in the middle? That might work if I notched the top of the player pawns so that the 'hat' could sit on them.

Looks sharp.

I don't see any reason why you'd need to bind yourself to the octagonal tiles, though.

I hate to be a stickler but aren't those picture from a SNES Mario game? If so that would make it 16-bit and not 8-bit.blush

Otherwise this looks like a superb project!

So, is the final space tile going to have the flag on it?

@Jason
Wow, Jason, and here I thought I had such a clever idea! surprise

I love what you did with the warp tubes. If you don't mind, I might experiment with using those for the start/end tiles.

@Richard
The flag on the final tile makes sense. I'll try that out as well.

@Mark
No, I wouldn't necessarily need octagonal tiles, but it might be nice to have them just to preserve some design similarities between the original and the re-theme. I'd be interested to know if people would prefer square tiles over octagonal tiles.

@Matthew
Well, it's a 16-bit update to an 8-bit game, Matthew, so the title is half accurate. I tried it with the original Super Mario 3 8-bit graphics and it wasn't that pretty. These graphics are from the Super Mario Allstars rerelease.

Please do, it only makes sense. You're putting a lot more effort into it, I really like what you're doing.

Another theme I thought of for Verflixxt! (and Mr Kiesling, Mr Kramer, if you're out there, this one should happen) is Monopoly. Hasbro could throw Monopoly properties on the tiles (good and bad), put chance and free parking on the good luck tiles, use 3 each of the classic Monopoly pawns, and maybe hotels as guards. Set the price at $12-$15 and it would sell like gangbusters.

Redesigned Flixxy pawn and accompanying tokens and die from the first expansion. These are NOT to scale.

These 1" figures look like a winner for a super-pimped edition. No clue how you'd use all of them, as I don't know the game well.

NICE find!!

You could just buy three copies of that set, and each player could be all three pawns of a single character!!

Man, I'm gonna have to buy some more ink and cardstock!!! This looks awesome!!!

Those are pretty cool. 3 sets would definitely do it. You'd just have to figure out a way to use the positive/negative hats with the figures.

Perhaps for the hats if you went with a red and geen mushroom made as simply a folded piece of paper/card that would sit atop the standee.

For the figures I'd think about a red and green brick/wall for a piece to stand on might work.

I happen to find the art in Verflixxt both pleasant and thematic. However, your version is awesome!

Yes, I'd love to play a one-player game of this.

The best part is when they release New Verflixxt! Wii, so up to four people can play.
