When I ordered Steel Wolves I also asked for IJN to come with it. Due to personal circumstances (moving house) I decided to pack Steel Wolves off without opening it (huge self-control required - did not even break the shrink wrap!) and stick with Silent War and add in the new IJN expansion to see what happened. I love the early war part of the game - it is just sooooo tough, so decided to go straight for the throat with Campaign Game 1.

And here it is in all of it's glory. If there is sufficient interest I will post all of the turns. I played the game on VASL. Here is a little teaser:

Quick word on format:
w-x-y-z = columns a-d respectively, ship contacts
C/Attack = Counter Attack of Escorts
NE = Attack happened but 'No Effect'
Implemented the clarification that subs are not allowed to transit move in the same turn that they conduct patrol activity. Boy, does this make the early war hard.

I love using the IJN add-on, since there is about (for me so far) a 50% chance the named DD is weaker than the generic one from the base set. BTW, I loath the early war. I have nightmares of -2 torpedo modifiers.

Reasonably lucky so far with these rolls - they seem to be bad news in the main. Cannot really complain with this one.

Well not much action but what did happen was significant. An extra damage result sinks another submarine with only one ship bagged in reply. A measly tonnage and ship sunk rate at this stage. Things really need to pick up - and quickly.

Neil---
Thanks for posting your after action reports. I have the SW/IJN rules on my bed table, and have been waiting to get up to speed so I can dive into the game. As a former Submariner with a keen interest and knowledge of the history of my valiant WW2 predecessors, I am very interested to see how the game plays and how it tracks with history.

Five boats lost in Dec 1941 is very high and would have deeply chagrined ADM Tommy Hart, commander of the US Asiatic Fleet and a Submariner himself. If I recall correctly, we only lost SEALION in the month of December, to aerial bombing at Cavite on the first day of the war (8 Dec in the Philippines).

I have always been fascinated with the first 4 months of the war in the Pacific, and the struggles and demise of the US Asiatic Fleet and ABDA command. Our submarines were expected to play a big role, and the results they achieved were a bitter disappointment. Skippers had been wrongly trained to attack from deep, and in some cases were overly cautious. Our torpedoes were unreliable, and the fog of war and lack of good intel on Japanese movements and intentions kept our crews off balance. That they continued to go out on patrol and honed their skills to achieve such success later in the war is a lasting testament to their courage and tenacity.

Keep the AAR's coming -- I will read with gusto and hope for better results!

War Event: None

Phew - still looking good on the War Event front.

The first reinforcements from the good old US of A.

Underway from Manila: PERMIT, S-36
Underway from Pearl Harbor: TRITON, DOLPHIN, CUTTLEFISH, GRAYLING, TUNA, GUDGEON, PLUNGER

7 Submarines on Patrol
Mmmmm, the rule clarification saying that no subs can transit move the same turn that they patrol means that the turn around in base takes longer. From 30 subs to 8 subs and now down to 7 subs on patrol.

Well the tonnage and ships sunk is starting to creep up which makes me feel a little better but I have lost yet another submarine and my damaged list steadily grows. Luckily a couple of superficial damage results on boats entering Manila keeps things in check in what is becoming a busy harbor. Still a long way to go though and we are now into the new year: 1942.

A nice fat 5,000 ton ship sunk this turn but I think I am well and truly behind the pace now. It is going to be some effort to meet the first war threshold. At least I appear to have slowed down the haemoraging of submarines. For now anyway.

A distinct losss of momentum with only one additional ship sunk. Only having 12 subs on patrol was not helpful though. This needs to improve and get back to last months standard or the first campaign check will not be good!

Too many attack not possible and too many aircraft. The Japanese have obviously informed their navy to be on the lookout for the American submarine fleet and their increased vigilence has done the trick for them this turn. No ships sunk and an ever increasing gradient to climb to success.

It is now looking very bleak and I have to say from my runnings of the early war campaign which I have now played 3 or 4 times it seems pretty near impossible. It does seem as though my submarine skippers have learned to look after themselves and their crews a little better after some initial heavy losses but it does not seem possible to win this game with only one turn remaining.
Maybe Alaska won't be so bad...

Can´t see any key errors.

Aleutians in week 4 February is really bad luck.

I finished yesterday week 2.
And I´m a bit confused, 83,000 tons (18 ships atm) ... looks too good.
Best boat: S-41 ... sunk M-15t with gun and AO-5t with torpedoes.

Good luck for your next campaign, Captain!
