After playing a few games in which all three lanes of the track have been clogged with riders from different teams, it seems odd to me that a player has to pay an extra energy point to pass through the square that his own teammate is occupying.

I have started playing with a house rule that you pay +1 energy to pass through an opponents square but you get to pass through your own team without penalty. You will still get some situations in which you are blocked out, but this house rule preserves the slipstream advantage as a team transitions from one type of terrain onto another type of terrain on a clogged track.
