This is my first posting of a session report. Constructive feedback is appreciated.

So I decided to record my first session of Thunderstone solo using the official rules. I think I got confused somewhere along the way due to the way that I was recording my information. Ah, well, that's not my major concern. What I'm wondering is how I could have done better. If anyone has any insight into ways I could have done better in the following games, I would appreciate it. Despite owning Thunderstone for a lil' while now, I haven't gotten the chance to take it out much at all.

So that I don't confuzify anyone, here's how I'm setting out each turn.

(M) after a card in hand to signify that it is a monster. I used this mostly because I abbreviated all of the card names to save my wrist.

I abbreviated a lot of things in my notes as well but I will only subject you to the following:
VV – visited village
ED – enter dungeon
EV – (monster) entered village
R – refill dungeon followed by the rank in parenthesis if other than r3
NA – no advance

Disclaimer(?): I used Thunderstone Shuffle by Joshua Buergel. It's a nifty lil' program and I recommend it to anyone with an android phone.

At the end I tried to get as many Goodberries as possible to offset my terrible gameplay. I didn't really have any strategy, to be honest. It was only my third game and I'm still getting the hang of the rules. Not to mention that it was my first experience with the official solo rules. I had tried playing solo previously, but I was only using the regular rules. No wonder that game was so easy. :P


*I have no idea what happened here. I think I confused myself with my session recording. I wasn't sure if this went with the second turn or the third so I just plopped it right there.

**Yeah, before anyone jumps down my throat, I've come to realize that I did this and other things incorrectly (and more than once). I confused the experience points with the victory points. I didn't realize this until later in the first game.

Game 2:

After I finished the previous game, I felt that I had a greater grasp of the concepts for the solo game so I decided to give it another go. I'm still deciding on a format to keep my gameplay sessions accurate and concise. Any suggestions as to how to tweak my stuff would be appreciated.

Damn. I did worse the second game AFTER understanding the rules a little better. Was this because of my setup or more dependent on my lack of strategy? I was just trying to get my hands on the heavy hitters and the flaming swords. I was frustrated with the inability to turn the militia into something useful without expending experience points. Could I have done this differently?

I've also come to the conclusion through both games that I really don't care for the abyssals. They seem to kick my butt every time that I encounter them. Well, I'm still just starting off so hopefully, with time, they'll learn to fear my wrath instead of the other way around.

OK here are some observations/comments about your game.

Game1
Turn 1 - With 2 gold, I'd trash a Militia instead of buying Iron Rations
Turn 2 - I'd get Trainer, even with that gold, the sooner the better to free your hands from Militias and get XP.

Now in general, I would tend to go with Dwarfs and Short Swords as main strategy in this case, because of initial cost vs. Selurin's high cost (8). The short sword is ideal as it's quite powerful and provides nice gold.

I'd avoid buying anything in the village other than a new Dwarf, a Short Sword, and maybe another hero as these village cards weren't very helpful. Trainer can be trashed once most militias are gone.

Additionally, I think that due to some of the early turns, it took you a while to go to the Dungeon, 11 turns, this means way too many monsters got to the village pile.

Thanks for the advice! I guess on the first couple of turns that I should try to cull my deck of militia since they don't net me any gain. I'm going to put it to work with the same setup and see how well I fare this time.

I got rid of my militia as soon as I could and concentrated on dwarves and swords. I kicked some serious buttocks.
