I had a discussion with a friend recently what you would choose if you could only listen to either music made in USA or music made in Europe. Europe won hands down (we both like classical music which really tipped the scales here).

Then we narrowed it down to USA vs different European countries and apart from Sweden (where we live) and Great Britain there was no doubt that we would pick USA.

But what about USA/Canada (since music wise we can't tell those two apart) vs Great Britain?

Hard choice, despite my love for the whole grunge scene and its descendants I'd probably go with GB, while he would go with America.

What would you pick?

America gave the world rock&roll.
Therefore the answer is "USA!"

Britain:
* The Beatles
* The Rolling Stones
* Cream & Clapton
* Black Sabbath
* Led Zeppelin
* David Bowie
* The Who
* Joe Cocker
* ...and many more

U.S.A./Canada:
* Neil Young
* The Black Crowes
* Jimi Hendrix
* The White Stripes
* The Doors
* Elvis Presley
* ...and many more

I'm not prepared to decide. I'm leaning towards the Americas solely due to the Crowes, White Stripes, and Neil Young.

I grew up with the Cure, the Smiths and That sort of stuff. Later I was heavily involved in the whole Manchesterish stuff like Ride, stoneroses, &cetera. The answer is undoubtedly UK and Eire.

This one is tough for me, I've been getting into a lot of the indie bands from GB lately. Though I think my music library still has more artists from USA.

So, I'd probably stick with the USA. Or either kill myself trying to decide, if that's an option?

Electronic music?

I'm not sure that is a strong claim.

Stockhausen was German, there was a strong Japanese scene, the French too all at or just before The New York School. The first sample-playback keyboard was British, and dates to 1949, so right in that period too.

But even before all of those was the Theremin and the Ondes Martenot and the Electronde.

Tough choice! Some of my favorites (I gave a ringer each to which seemed more appropriate):

GB:
Jeff Beck
Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Rolling Stones
Cream
Black Sabbath
Queen
Pink Floyd
Dire Straits
Pretenders (UK/US)
Fleetwood Mac (a bit of both eventually)
(Australia) AC/DC

US:
Van Halen
Stevie Ray Vaughn
ZZ Top
Hendrix (with a nod to the Brits in the band)
Steve Miller
Aerosmith (70s)
Heart (70s)
Stevie Wonder
Talking Heads
Blondie
Chuck Berry
(Mexico) Carlos Santana

Impossible really, but given my favorite (Beck) is a Brit and overall strength of the catalog of those bands, I'll go that way.

Typical Northern Hemispheres-blah blah blah, how good are we surely I can't pick Britain, oh no the USA is crass, whine whine whine.

Hey there are some people that live in the south!

So I'd choose Aussie music because we get to include New Zealand in that too but also I couldn't pick between those other two.

Ack - this is tough...

Just thinking on some of my favorites....

US:

Johnny Cash
Howling Wolf
Muddy Waters
Elvis (pre-Army)
Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons
Beach Boys
Byrds
Buffalo Springfield
Jefferson Airplane
Ted Nugent
Aerosmith
Alice Cooper
Nirvana
Stone Temple Pilots
Alice in Chains
Metallica
Ramones
B-52's
Devo
The Cars
REM
White Stripes
...and many more

UK:

Beatles
Rolling Stones
Kinks
The Animals
Donovan
Yardbirds
Cream
Who
David Bowie
Led Zeppelin
Queen
Yes
Sex Pistols
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
Judas Priest
The Clash
Elvis Costello
Kasabian

A very slight nod to the US acts, but then, especially given the type of music I like, it's almost a meaningless distinction, as these bands all influences one another. There are very few 'pure' American or British acts.

Jazz, Blues, R&B, Soul, Bluegrass, Hip Hop, Funk, rockabilly.

Europe has a few good acts in the pop arena and beats us clearly in the classical arena but USA all the way.
