Race for the Galaxy - PBF Game #20.

-------------------
GAME FINISHED

Clickthrough to the geeklist (unless you're Wei-Hwa!)

Be sure the first thing you do is click subscribe!

-------------------

How it works
I am going to moderate a 2pa game of RftG through Keldon's AI 0.8.1k. It will be a rematch, one BGG forum team against Wei-Hwa Huang, whose credits for RftG include "original graphics and development assistance".

Players may join at any time in the game
Come and go as you wish. Players of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. It goes without saying that Wei-Hwa will not look at our geeklist during the game. This thread, however is open for public discussion, so watch what you say during the game.

Some detail on how the game functions
In the geeklist please explain why you want to take your action. Strategy discussion is highly encouraged. To avoid bias, please put your first strategy reply to a decision point behind spoiler [ o] tags. To avoid groupthink ideally also post before reading replies to the current decision point (yes it's scary, but everyone is a lot more likely to learn something that way.) Please do not delete a post once made, even if it "duplicates" another's views.

Bolding what you are voting for or putting it on its own line makes it much easier for me to decipher. I am going to use posts and thumbing comments as the voting system. Your thumbs override your posts if there is a contradiction. Remember thumbs can be removed, so you can change your mind. Majority vote wins.

This game basically works like a play by email game so expect game choice/actions/forward motion to be between 0-4 per day. This game will play over the weekend. Expect the game to last 1-2 weeks.

The Fine Print.
-If a bug occurs with the software, it stands and the game moves on (unless programming magician borgemik can fix it, which he has done before).
-If we misclick, the misclick stands as there's no undo in online play.
-The captain will be playing as well - this is not nearly as fun for me if i can only spectate.
-Captain vote will be used to break ties (in the unlikely event this occurs.)
-Trivial decisions (such as final turn guaranteed win) may be fastforwarded in the interests of playing more games.

Good psych-out there on turn 5, BGG. If I end up losing this one by 3 points, I'll know why

Wei-Hwa had both Galactic Bankers and Earth's Lost Colony in hand before the final turn. So, with Settle/Cx3, 9 cards in hand, and any dev call from us, he had the option to place GB/ELC and end the game with:
* 45(after GB) +2ELC +3-5b/b goal +12Cx3 +2DefSp = 64-66 VPs (66 given AG)

Our choosing E+1/II instead of II/II didn't matter.

(Though, he chose not to do this and settled TW to end at 65 VPs... ;-)

In case anyone was curious -- the reason I did E+5 on turn 2 was to have a shot at finding Contact Specialist, since I already have Rebel Pact and Pan-Galactic Mediator.

Also, my comment on Thursday was not intended to influence the forum's decision; it was merely an observation that I found interesting. I do apologize if people read more into it than it was.

Reading the analysis thread, I find it absolutely scary the amount of discussion and analysis that goes into the Forum's moves. Had I known, I wouldn't have expected even a small chance of winning. Glad I managed to get just enough extra luck to pull out the victory here!

(1) I would be frustrated as onigame with that first turn. Toss away hidden fortress and promptly pick up NGO and drop ships. That is one of the key rules in rftg however.

(2) Terraforming engineers isn't a bad outcome from an explore +5. It would encourage a faster engine setup or just work as a settle deterrent; however, galactic markets is again just a ridiculously good card to have out.

(3) He did have interstellar casus belli and tossed it away next turn to pay for new economy. Interesting...

Crazy idea: is there any way to see the game state at each decision point from onigame's perspective without manually going into the spreadsheet and entering the graphics?

That would be nice indeed. It could probably be done, someone would have to write an xml parser of some sort?

Finally played through the game from onigame's perspective. Most of what i noticed was already covered.

In case anyone was curious -- the reason I did E+5 on turn 2 was to have a shot at finding Contact Specialist, since I already have Rebel Pact and Pan-Galactic Mediator.

Interesting. 10% chance of success. Almost a Search-quality percentage.

Here's what was kept post-builds:

T1 Pan-Galactic Mediator
T2 Pan-Galactic Mediator
T4 New Earth
T6 Uplift Gene Breeders, Galactic Bankers, Federation Capital
T7 Galactic Bankers, Federation Capital, Tourist World, Contact Specialist

I've always found repeatedly $/V'ing to be a boring 2pa strategy to both play against and to execute. It's no surprise that going over the game from onigame's perspective there's not much to say/argue. It's like autopilot, play the clear best card(s) for whatever build phase(s) your opponent called, discard keeping whatever your best card(s) are. Rinse/repeat.

Even if it's the likely correct play, i never play that strategy for 2 reasons:
1) it all but removes the psychological dimension of RftG (phase selection dynamics);
2) there's not a lot to think about - very few interesting decisions to make.

Those are two of the very few fundamental reasons why RftG is fascinating to me, so i don't play strategies that kill the game for me. To my detriment, but i'd much rather have fun losing than be bored winning.

About the T2 I+5/$ play, it's very surprising to me.

His hand: Pan-Galactic Mediator, New Galactic Order, Drop Ships, Galactic Markets, Rebel Pact.

I think i would II/$ (Galactic Markets) there with 2 worlds out already, rather than dig for a military world tri-synergy. Different playstyles i guess.

I probably shouldn't be giving away my secrets while I'm playing against the lot of you, but E+5 makes sense there to defend against a possible settle call. Because there are a number of high-value high-cost worlds in BoW, it's a bit trickier than in previous expansions to tell if someone will call develop or settle when they have a hand advantage on you. Contact Specialist would be a nice alternative if there isn't a settle.

You may not be surprised that I disagree with you on $/V, but I find the strength of your statement quite surprising. $/V is a move when you are in control of the game, that's why it might seem like easy mode. You can't usually pull it off unless you have the advantage already. However, getting that advantage and maintaining it are not necessarily easy. There are many cards which can really punish this phase combination, such as Trade League, or any of the cards that draw on V, like Uplift Code. You've also shown me many plays that work against it, like double explore.

Furthermore, playing it is not auto-pilot. You have to know which cards to play--there isn't always a single "best" card in Race. You have to manage your hand so that you can deal well against any phase combination your opponent calls. In short, it is a reactive strategy, like control in Magic, submission moves in wrestling, or playing on the ropes in boxing. You also have to know when to change strategies, into engine or Terraforming Engineers craziness or whatever.

I also tried to think of a poker analogy, and maybe I got it wrong, but for me it seems kind of like playing an unsuited straight when there are two suited cards in the flop. You have a strong hand, and you want to pull more money in the pool, but if you go too long, you may let someone draw into a flush. Forgive me if I missed the boat with that one
