I'm having a lot of fun with this game. Though some complain that the Stardate cards lack flavor text I have found a fun way to add thematic flavor...Sound Effects. At first I was using this website on my netbook:

http://www.soundboard.com/sb/Star_Trek_Sound_Effects.aspx

It's a well laid out sound board that has a pretty nice array of sounds. You may even be able to use this with a smart phone (don't know for sure as I don't have one).

I was looking around for a more portable solution and found this on ebay:

The sound quality may not be as good, but it has a cool tactile feel and fits in the box.

Anyways, you should give this a try. I think it adds something to hear a transporter sound when moving down to the planet or photon torpedos when attacking the Klingon ship.
