Hi,

I've recently purchased the Nightfall base set (along with the promo from BGG and the two promos from AEG), and we played our first game last night. However, there seems to be lots of different ways to play this on two players - what is the recommended way? (For the first game, we stuck with the suggestions in the rule book, but quickly glancing through the forums here, I see a lot of alternatives suggested, and suspect that the rule book was aimed more at multiplayer games than at 2-player games.)

Use how many common archives (including ones from draft)? (We used 8, but felt chains were quite hard to come by - but that might have been the particular card set we ended up with.)

Put out common archives before or after draft? (We put them out after draft, but that meant drafting choices turned out very random, as I ended up with cards that couldn't work in chains. I think putting them out before would increase the level of strategy in the draft.)

How to do the draft? (We did: Get 4 cards, Remove 1 from game, Draft 1 for private archives, Draft 1 for private archives, Last card to common archives... I think offering a few more cards to choose from would have improved the experience).

How many wounds to play to? (We played to 20, which resulted in a fairly short game - we were just starting to get our decks built up and then it ended. Also, it means quite an emphasis was put on who got the last blow of the game.)

Any other suggestions for how to get as good a 2 player experience as possible out of this game? I find the chaining mechanism very intriguing, and the directly attacking each other gives quite a different feel than Dominion / Thunderstone. I also like the catch-up mechanism in that wounds let you draw extra cards.

Use 8 common archives, but deal them before doing the draft.

Use the 2-player draft variant mentioned in the rulebook - discarding your first choice instead of choosing it.

Use 30 wounds instead of 20.

It works really well as a 2-player game in my opinion, and my wife and I really enjoy it as such.
Cheers!

I also suggest the 2 player variant of "exile, private, private, common", which seems to be what you did. 30 wounds is also what I like to play with in 2 player. As for drafting, deal 6 cards face-up to the commons prior to drafting so that after the draft there will be a total of 8 cards in the commons (10 archives available to each player, counting the private archives).

Where did you find the promos from AEG? I looked at the Nightfall homepage last week and couldn't find links for them anywhere?

http://store.alderac.com/nightfall-promo-pack-p-1329.html has them for sale. I've gathered there's a second promo pack being given out at conventions and such - I would assume that one will end up at AEG's store at some point later on to.
