"PJ Harvey puts war hell on record" - her latest album, "Let England Shake" is a "song cycle of visceral narratives about England in conflict, from World War I to fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan":

And a damn good album too. And she wrote all the songs herself!
I stumbled over this one because of a review in a HiFi magazine, and I was really impressed!

It's about time!! I've been listening to this release since Feb/March!!

Polly Jean is simply amazing! I have been listening to her since ~1995 when she popped up on my radar with 'to bring you my love.'

Another songwriter who is very good at capturing war and historical themes in his songs is James Keelaghan, including Japanese internment during WWII, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, the Dunkirk sea-retreat, Tecumseh's resistance (told from Rebecca's POV), etc.

http://web.me.com/jameskeelo/Keeloweb/Main.html

His stuff is at iTunes and CDBaby, com, where you can listen to excerpts.

I recommend Rebecca's Lament, Red River Rising, Small Rebellion, Kiri's Piano, Abraham, Fires of Calais.

Gawd I hate PJ Harvey - saw her in concert once (my date's idea) and Harvey spent the whole time talking about her hair and looking like she was about to fall off the stage. Over. Rated.

Concert was a washout, but I went on to marry my date, so it wasn't all bad.

[EDIT: dumb typo]

She appeared a while back on a Berthold Brecht compilation album singing "The Ballad of the Soldier's Wife" - a song about a German women being sent gifts from Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris, and so on, the final gift being a widow's veil from Russia. I wonder if that's where she got the idea for her own album?
