I live in Pflugerville and work in north Austin. While we weren't affected by any of the fires, we know many people that were, including some that were evacuated from Steiner, Spicewood, and Bastrop. My company is circulating a list of materials to collect for donation to the fire shelters, for the people still being evacuated from the raging fire, and also for the former residents of the 1400+ homes destroyed so far.

One item jumped out at me (bolded on the original list, not by me):

Quote:
Miscellaneous:
1. Can openers
2. Plastic Trash Bags
3. Plastic Plates and Cups
4. Plastic Utensils
5. Sleeping Bags
6. Blankets
7. Pillows
8. Towels/Washcloths
9. Board Games for students and families at the shelters
10. Old radios
11. Batteries-All sizes
12. Flashlights
14. Hair clips, rubber bands etc.

While anyone anywhere could send donations to the Red Cross, I thought that those in Austin who might read this could consider donating a few spares games. Certainly one of you have a copy of Scrabble (newly inducted into the BGG Hall of Fame) that you could part with? I think we can spare an unused copy of Monopoly, and maybe some Fluxx cards.

Anyway, you wouldn't necessarily think that something like this is important, but there are a lot of kids that just need some semblance of normality while living in a shelter with everything they owned gone.

I'm not certain which organizations (beside my company) are collecting items like this. If you have something to donate, I suggest you contact the Red Cross, Salvation Army, or Goodwill, and/or watch the #centraltxfires twitter feed or listen to the local news/radio for information on where to donate.
