First day of the Somme offensive, near the village of La Boiselle.

Players roll dice at the beginning of each turn to determine the number of 'couplets' (i.e initiative). Each couplet allows to prepare artillery fire or to move units. Up to 12 units can be moved if they are adjacent and on their organized side (the nato symbol), but this will fall to one or two when they are on the dispersed side (silhouette). Units become dispersed as the result of enemy fire, combat, going through some terrains like wires.

This scenario is 6 turn long, the British wins by controlling 3 hexes of the German trench : one in La Boiselle, another one in Schwaben Hoe, and the last one in "The Sausage" trench.

Preliminary bombardment followed by the explosion of a mine under the German trench destroys one infantry company and creates some breaches in the wires, but the machine gun platoons are unaffected and ready to fire.

Turn 1 (3 couplets)
A German infantry reforms just before the British launch their attack. At the sound of whistles, all companies get out of their trenches and run through the no man's land toward the wires. Near Schwaben Hoe, four companies are annihilated by machine guns fire, another one is dispersed. A part of the assault line delays the attack. Things look better near La Boiselle where British troops reach the German trenches.

Turn 2 (1 couplet) and Turn 3 (1 couplet)
British companies in La Boiselle get into the German trench and engage the defenders in close combat with great determination. This will be hallowed ground for the rest of the battle.
Once per scenario, one hex can become hallowed ground for one side and provides bonuses in melee for the rest of the battle.
Two more companies are lost, one in close combat and another one hit by machine gun fire before reaching the trench.

Turn 4 (3 couplets)
Both sides receive reinforcements : 12 British and 4 German companies.
The second English wave launch its assault. Four British companies go for Schwaben Hoe (center) but only half of them will make it. The machine gun defending Sausage Redoubt is far less accurate and two British companies reach the trench closely followed by three others without taking any casualties. In La Boiselle, the close combat turns in the Brits favor and the German company is eliminated.

Turn 5 (1 couplet)
Two German companies assault Schwaben Hoe eliminating one of the two British companies. The Sausage redoubt is conquered.

Turn 6 (2 couplets)
Both sides move troops and fight in La Boiselle which remains under British control.

Outcome
This is a British victory with the control of all three objectives. The German were not able to take Schwaben Hoe back which is still contested - there are still some tommies hanging on the trench. (Technically a hex is controlled by the last side to have solely occupied it, in that case a British one)

It is such a great scenario. The German machine guns take a heavy toll on the British troops. There are so many more British counters than the Germans at the start, it seems like it will be easy to take the objectives, but open ground and machine guns = HIGH casualty rates.
Nice report!

Thanks for the great after action report. Your summary makes me want to break this one out and play. For all readers, this is only a tiny fraction of what's available in Red Poppies Campaigns (RPC). If you like this, don't be shy about telling Worthingon Games that you want to see RPC in print.

By all means hit that button. Then, go to the Worthington Games folder on consimworld - link below - and tell them you want to see Red Poppies Campaign. Their lining up next year's production schedule, so now's the time to sound off.
