I'll be in Utrecht and Hilversum next week, and was wondering if there were any games that stand out in people's minds that I should look for, that aren't generally available outside Holland, or Europe generally. I tend to like heavier Euros, but am open to pretty much anything. Right now my plan is to hit up the shops in Utrecht and see if anything catches my eye - last time I was there (2009) I didn't have much time for game shopping, unfortunately.

Hello Jason,
First of all I hope you will have a good time in The Netherlands.
In Utrecht the game shop The Joker has a good reputation.

I was in Utrecht years back. The Joker was cool, but I also found some interesting games in comic shops and bookstores.

I was also able to set up a game night while I was there. We played 1856 late into the night.

Don't miss the restaurants next to the canals below street level. I'd love to visit there again.

The Joker has a large collection of second hand games. Not cheap; they know what those games are worth, but you should check them out. They closed their second shop; I guess the jigsaw puzzles weren't profitable enough.

NeverNeverLand is about 100m north of the Joker; they also have a large collection.

There's a third game shop in Utrecht outside the city centre, Van der Meijden, which is notable (at least for me!) for two things: it's where I bought my first games, and it's the oldest game shop I know: established in 1872. I haven't been back there for years now. Their webshop shows Goa, so it may be for sale there and elsewhere.

Some games are also sold in the "Hilversumse boekhandel", which is a book shop in the centre of Hilversum.

I can't really help you with the games, I'm afraid; I have no idea what games aren't available in the US...

Being a small country the Dutch have a distorted sense of size. While NeverNeverland has a decent collection I wouldn't call it large.

Infront of and below NeverNeverLand, right on the canal, is SubCulture, which has a small collection, but adds for a bit more variety. Also across the other side of the cancel from Joker is a games workshop they who shall not be named, which also has a small collection.

Between all four shops you will have a large selection.

Talk to the guy in the Joker, it will consume several hours of your life you won't get back, but he'll point you at some good local games and will be genuinely helpful.

If you are looking for something more specific maybe we can help.

Nothing specific, no. Obviously I'm hoping to find some Splotter stuff, but generally I'm just going to wing it :-)

Thanks for all the info so far!

I ended-up grabbing a used copy of Sid Sackson's Metropolis from The Joker. Also got Cannes from The Joker, Rory's Story Cubes: Actions from Subculture (these are not available in the US), and a copy of Heckmeck courtesy of Knizia, who keynoted the conference I was at. A good haul, I think

It has been available at some point in time, at least in WirWar in Groningen and in The Joker in Utrecht. I've seen Bus, Cannes, and a few others (though never Roads&Boats of course).

So Splotter has definitly been available in shops.
