What if players bid VPs for start order? And that's the only thing it's for, meaning no bonus discovery or specialist, as stated in the advanced rules. Also, the starting bid has to be 1, and following players can only bid 1 more or pass. (You could even draw for bid order.)

First person to pass gets last, and so on. Person in 2nd place subtracts half their last VP bid, rounded up, and the person in 1st subtracts their entire bid of VPs. (So if 2nd's last bid before passing was 3, they start at -2 VP, and if 1st's bid was 4, they start at -4.)

If you want to potentially "sweeten the pot" (and everyone knows what they're bidding on) you could have the initial Age I buildings and trade goods laid out before bidding starts.

Everyone's starting coin is based off the normal rules, thereby giving latter players a little more, and everyone can still afford a building on turn 1. Thoughts?

Sounds reasonable, I'd be interested to hear how it works out.

I definitely wouldn't pay more than one or two VP to be able to start the turn (and only if there is an interesting building available).

So, in you system, how would you decide who bids first? Imho, in my group, he first and second place would probably go to the second and first player to bid...

But that's only my view

I was thinking draw for bid order. However, do people think initial turn order isn't that important? To some extent, it feels fairly important to our group.

Our perception is that beeing first doesn't seem to increase your win chances significantly.

Of course, you can take an edge with some building choices, but nothing that will really affect the balance of the game.

The money you get by taking your turn later seems to be an adequate compensation to the turn order advantage.

But that is my (and to some extent, my fellow gamers) opinion.

Good to know. I've thought only 1 extra coin per turn seems too sparse, however, to jump to 2 extra coin per turn would be too much, especially in a 5-player game.
