The Last Question by Isaac Asimov, 1956

As described by Asimov, one of his favorite short stories. It is IMO, a perfect example of a SciFi short story. It's also IMO an amazingly cool little story/idea.

Enjoy:

I read that as a kid and still remember it well. I think that and "The Feeling of Power" (maybe the name is a bit wrong) were in the same book, right? The latter was a fun joke but not as serious as "The Last Question."

Ooh, I don't think I've read The Feeling of Power, don't spoiler it and I'll go look it up.

EDIT: found it here: http://www.themathlab.com/writings/short%20stories/feeling.h...

Okay, I've read that. I read it when I was a kid and to this day remember it as a cool little idea.

Asimov is not my favorite science fiction author anymore but I do have a special place in my heart for his work because I discovered science fiction really when my sister gave me a copy of "The Martian Way and other stories" when I was about 10yo or so.

YMMV but, a story in the similar vein that I've always preferred is Arthur C. Clarke's The Nine Billion Names of God which is in the same vein.

Other great classic sci-fi short stories:

"All you Zombies" by Robert Heinlein
"'Repent Harlequin,' Said The Ticktockman" by Harlan Ellison
"Jefty Is Five" by Harlan Ellison
"I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" by Harlan Ellison
"Killdozer" by Theodore Sturgeon
"Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut
"Unaccompanied Sonata" by Orson Scott Card
"The Men Who Murdered Mohammed" by Alfred Bester
and my favorite sci-fi short story of all time "Gonna Roll The Bones" by Fritz Leiber

Can you tell I am a giant sci-fi geek?
