Been getting the Barrier mission a lot and want to confirm I am doing it right.

1. Moving a sub from Freemantle by transit to adjacent OP area, then flipping to Patrol mode.
2. Then moving to the SMZ zone, conduct a transit check which is the OP Area +2. (no bonus for moving in transit mode, nor cautious transit).
3. Conduct search and contact, using the OP AREA it came from. I ignore small convoys, only big ones and TFs are attacked.
4. Once complete the sub is AUTOmatically RTB (no endurance check) and placed in the DONE section of the OP AREA it came from.
This last step is the one I am not sure about.

Repeat...until I have enough subs that moved into there, and if it is impossible to move the correct amount I move the most I can.

If anyone can confirm or correct my procedure it would be much appreciated.

Other than that this is my first game. I hate the torpedoes. I barely missed getting sacked (made 91,000 tons in a nick of time). And I keep my sub in column A and actually prefer the smaller convoys because the chance of an escort is rare and gives me a better chance to hit on second round with the bonus of 1 to the TDC.

Before I started this game I read Silent Victory. All 800 pages...well worth it.

Step 4 is correct. But step 1 must be done in previous turn because after transit movement submarine is placed in Done section, her action is over. In current turn only operating (active) patrol side up submarine may use her patrol movement to enter SMZ. Only then, if player has operating (active) transit side submarine in SMZ OpArea (or adjacent) he can flip submarine to patrol side and use patrol movement (not transit movement) to enter SMZ. And player cannot flip submarine to patrol side in Fremantle. So all 4 steps in Your example can be done in 2 turns.

Rule [5.2]: Some War Events direct the player to deploy a certain number of submarines to a Special Mission Zone for the turn. These submarines utilize Patrol Movement to enter the SMZ. If the player does not have enough submarines able to enter the zone via Patrol Movement (see [12.0]), non-RTB submarines that are Transit side up in or adjacent to an OpArea with the SMZ must be flipped to their Patrol side and moved into the SMZ.

Rule [12.2]: Submarines may not use Patrol Movement to enter or depart a submarine base.

FAQ [20.5]: Submarines in an SMZ skip the Endurance check. Unless noted below, these submarines are
marked RTB and placed in the “Done” section of the OpArea from which they entered the SMZ.
FAQ [20.51] Submarines conducting the following War Events must enter RTB status and conduct
transit movement in the current turn: Fall of Luzon, Run to Corregidor, Fall of the Dutch East Indies.

Yes, -2 torpedoes is a challenge. Good hunting, skipper!

Thanks for the reply...was waiting for someone to help me out here.

Since the Barrier Mission is a one turn mission I guess if the sub is not in the adjacent zone then those subs I was using transit movement with (2 zones away)...well i should not be using them at all. In other words I try to fulfill the mission but due to lack of available subs I cannot. Thus the subs in Freemantle are not being used up for this mission?

No, You can't use subs in Fremantle for this mission. So, when mission is rolled You must use as many available subs as You can in SMZ OpArea or adjacent OpAreas. First patrol side subs, only then flip other active subs from transite (non-RTB) to patrol and make patrol movement to SMZ. If not enough subs, there is no penalty for not completed mission. Another trick is that subs when patrol moving must roll for Transit Event - if RTB is rolled this sub don't enter SMZ and is not counted for successful mission results (sometimes You will need more than 8 subs try to fulfil Barrier Mission).
