Here are what the Family/Party Game judges have to say about increasing your chance of getting your game into the finals.

1. Make sure you circle the correct box. A lot of games that are really strategy games are mistakenly designated as Family/Party Games.

Family game:
• All family games should go down to an age group of at least 8.
• Family games should be primarily weighted to chance, since kids under the age of 12 have difficulty with abstract strategy and can easily get frustrated playing with adults who have advanced abstract skills.
• Family games should avoid extreme violence or confrontation. Some dueling is okay in a family game, but should be thematically more playful and not overtly violent.
• Family games should be themed for a family with children. If you had an 8-year-old child, imagine and think what would be consistent and appropriate for their age group.

Party Game:
• Party games are intrinsically social. If there is limited to no social interaction, laughter, lobbying, or discussion, it isn’t a party game.
• Party games should appeal to a large play group.
• Since party games are thematically focused on interaction, a game with the words dragon, lair, sword, duel, wizards, etc. does not sound like a party game.
• Party games are thematically less focused on winner/loser scenarios. Taboo, Mad Gab, Apples to Apples are all less focused on winning/losing and more focused on interaction. If you have ever played Curses, who ever even keeps track of who wins the game?
• Party games are most often purchased by women, who make up more than 85% of the buying public. Approximately 86% of all purchases are either made or influenced by women. Party games are certainly in that category. Games that appeal to men are often not the same things that appeal to women. Men like strategy and win/lose games. Women like to win, but they enjoy social interaction more. Pandemic is a perfect example. It is a strategy game, but women like it because it requires cooperation/interaction.

We hope that helps. If our strategy judges decide to submit some of their thoughts and criteria for selecting finalists, we'll post those. Until then, keep designing and playing.

Remember the deadline for submission is November 20, 2011. Full rules are available at: http://www.saltcon.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&ca...

A friendly reminder that submissions for the 2012 Ion Award competition are due in one month on November 30, 2011. Find more details at:
http://www.saltcon.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&ca...

An important change this year is that a designer may have more than one game in the Ion Award finals.

This should be another exciting competition.

You'll be saved Scott if you come to SaltCON

No, just saving some space near the top of the thread in case we need to insert some important information. It's a way to keep all the good stuff together.

The 2011 SaltCON Best Strategy Game "Pizza Theory" is on Kickstarter. You can effectively pre-order it.

Pizza Theory is produced by our friends at FRED Distribution who picked up the game at SaltCON 2011. This is the same company that makes the beautiful Pastiche and soon to be available "The Road to Canterbury" (arriving in the US on November 2nd).

Pastiche International will also be available shortly.

Here's the kickstarter link for Pizza Theory if you want to become a backer.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/167427101/pizza-theory-t...

If this gets funded quickly and in the production pipeline soon, you might even be able to get your copy at SaltCON 2012!

I may have to attend this year. I've lived here for almost a year now, and have been locked inside my house as a self avowed game hermit. Perhaps I should actually.... meet people. surprise

2/11/2012 11PM Saturday - Closed for new Items.

Also what does everyone think about a 1 hour trade during the CON?
Dan is excited to do one and if we have interest we will do it. It would give everyone another chance to trade and some of those people who are new and apprehensive can get in person explanations and help. You will need to be a registered attendee to participate in this trade.

This is exactly what happened to last year's Strategy game winner, Pizza Theory, which is being published by Gryphon Games and will be released to the public by them at SaltCON 2012. Come on out and join us...it'll be an awesome event!

Thank you also to the following pre-screen judges (listed alphabetically by company/affliation) for helping select the 2012 Ion Award Finalists:

Their better rate was better on the saltcon webpage than when talking to them. 49 dollars is a lot better than 69 dollars when the reg cost is 79.

I'd like the 49 dollar route personally.

Any idea how I can get that?

The room rate is $49 as posted on the SaltCON website. Please try reserving again to see if you receive that rate. If anyone else has issues with the hotel, please feel free to contact me at steve then saltcon.com

Hope that helps!
