Click here to withdraw to the second day of the long retreat home!

Turn 9: November 27, Morning (French morale 2, Russian morale 8)

(random event = “Avec Moi, Mes Amis!” No effect, as nobody to rally)
IG crosses Gaina river to their NW as II moves up along road. Cadre in woods outside Stori-Borisov move south to engage Russian IV, with IX moving to engage AG & Stragglers moving into Bytczi.

AG disengages south

Both cadres attack Russian IV, forcing IV to withdraw, and one of the cadres advancing after combat. On the other side of the Berezina, II attacks the Russian cadre (over the bridge), but are only able to remain engaged against them. Finally, Stragglers (are forced to) attack Ru Rsv, also managing to remain engaged!

(random event = “Watch and Wait!” Cards reshuffled)
WR moves into woods outside Bytczi, with Bag cav moving to attack Stragglers in that location. Ja moves along road towards Veselowa, with Fo moving through Kostrisa. On the other side of the Berezina, cadre moves to the north of IG.

Rsv attacks Stragglers, but are (again!) only able to remain engaged against them. Cadre commits reserves (-1 Russian morale) against IG, routing them 3 hexes (roll of 4, -1 for elite status)(-1 French morale for routing further than movement) and advancing after combat, Bag cav attacks Stragglers in Bytczi, but are themselves forced to withdraw. Finally, AG and IV combine to attack cadre south of Stori-Borisov, forcing them to withdraw, with IV advancing after combat.

Situation at end of turn 9

Turn 10: November 27, Mid-day (French morale 1, Russian morale 7)

(random event = “Abandoning the loot!” Opt not to have any straggler move, as doesn’t have 1 morale point to spare)
IG marches off the map (+1 French morale) through Zemblin, as II moves to engage the Russian cadre and as IX moves to engage AG.

II attacks Cadre, forcing them to withdraw and advancing after combat. Stragglers attack Rsv, but are forced to withdraw north with Rsv advancing after combat & destroying the pontoon bridge for good. IX attacks AG, rouginh AG 6 hexes (-1 Russian morale) and also advancing after combat. Finally, both cadres attack the (now surrounded) Ru IV, forcing IV to withdraw. This is a hazardous retreat, which IV fails and so breaks instead (+1 French morale, -1 Russian morale). The Eastern-most Cadre then advances after combat.

(random event = “Blizzard” For this turn and subsequent enemy turn, all units have -1 MA, cannot enter EZOCs or commit reserves)
Cossacks arrive, moving into Nemonitsa as Ja and Fo both continue towards Veselowo.

Rsv again attacks Stragglers, finally routing (i.e breaking for -1 French morale, +1 Russian morale) them and opting to stand fast rather than advance after combat. Cadre (is forced to) attack II, but are themselves routed 5 hexes (-1 Russian morale), with the first of these being a hazardous retreat: a hazardous retreat which they fail and so break instead (+1 French morale). II advances after combat.

Situation at end of turn 10

Turn 11: November 27, Afternoon (French morale 3, Russian morale 5)

(random event = “Vive l’Empereur!” May spend 1 morale point – even to force march – for free (REM: Blizzard still in effect))
French forces use that free morale point to force march: II north towards the LoC in Zemblin, with IX, the two Cadres and the single remaining Stragglers all towards the bridge at Borrisow.

(random event = “Barclay de Tolly” Associated roll(s) = no effect)
Rsv moves into Stakhov, WR into Bytczi, Ja into Veselowo, Fo moves south cross-country, Cossacks and Bag cav both move to attack Stragglers and AG moves along road between Nemonitsa and Borrisow, towards Borrisow.

Cossacks and Bag cav combine to attack Stragglers, forcing them to withdraw. Bag cav then advance after combat.

Situation at end of turn 11

Turn 12: November 27, Evening (French morale 3, Russian morale 5)

(random event = “A crush of bleary-eyed Stragglers” May not use road movement bonus)
II marches off the map thorugh Zemblin (+1 French morale) as IX and the 2 cadres both head towards Stakhov, having crossed the bridge at Borrisow.

Stragglers attack Bag cav, and are themselves routed (i.e. broken for -1 French morale, +1 Russian morale), with Bag cav advancing after combat.

(random event = “Caution and doubt”. All MAs down to 1)
Fo continues (slowly) cross-country, with Bag cav, Cossacks, AG, Wr and Ja all using road move bonuses on their respective roads.

Bag cav attacks Cadre (over the Borrisow bridge), only remaining engaged.

Situation at end of turn 12

Turn 13: November 27, Night (French morale 3, Russian morale 6)

(random event = “A breakdown in discipline” May not commit reserves – really a No Effect during night turns)
French forces re-organise their order of march, with both Cadres moving north while IX drops south to guard the Borrisow bridge crossing.

French then regain a single morale point from rest (+1 French morale)

(random event = “Watch and Wait” Cards reshuffled)
On the east side of the Berezina, Fo continues to cut cross-country, Bag cav moves east, while AG, WR and Ja all continue along their respective roads and as Bar Cav (finally) arrives on the scene.

During night ops, IV remains broken, and the Russians the regain a morale point from rest (+1 Russian morale)

Situation at end of turn 13

Oh the end game is looking good for when it continues. We'll have to see if that lone Russian 2-2 can hold of the French long enough for the others to get across the Berezina to help crush the remaining French before they keep moving northwards to try and escape.

Really a great game so far David.

This looks like it's going to go all the way down to the wire. Don't see a French victory, but possibly a draw. Amusing that you pulled off the rare "shift evacuation bridges" maneuver -- we only saw that once in testing, so it's quite uncommon, but it's still a good reason for the Russians not to re-build the Borrisow bridge.

Yeah,Borrisow can be a double edged sword.Russian's sort of need it to get more units over the river to chase down the French but it can also be another French lifeline not getting trapped and destroyed if their main crossing point was taken.

By this stage, the Russians were wishing they'd never repaired it: either that, or that they'd had the forethought to mine it so it could be blown up again!

Actually, there's a thought for a future game: a couple of them have forces trying to build bridges; I don't think there's any were the reverse (trying to destroy one) is true ...
