When I lived in Maryland, WHFS-FM was still a funky independent music station. One song I liked a lot was Warm Leatherette:

Warm leatherette
Melts on your burning flesh
I can see your reflection
In the luminescent dash

The announcer told me the group was Hot Rats, or something like that. This is what I remember distinctly. This was long before the Grace Jones cover, which I also like a lot.

So today I was googling around, and looked at the Wikipedia Entry for the song. It tells me the author was Daniel Miller. It says his group was the Normal. No mention of Hot Rats. But that's not what the announcer told me!

Did anyone else here listen to WHFS back in the day? Can I get some confirmation? Or have I wandered into an alternate reality?

The Normal's song sounds like he's saying Warm Leather Rats. Perhaps the
announcer was just making a Frank Zappa joke.

The Normal is the correct answer in this reality.

I miss WHFS. I lived in Northern Virginia for a while, discovered it late, but listened to it all the time before I moved.

My friend and I went to the HFS-tival back in 1995 at RFK. Then the next Sunday after the show they had a live interview with Primus interspersed by the entire concert from the show. I have that on tape somewhere... I should put it on digital. The HFS-tival was memorable because right before the Ramones played (they closed), Tony Bennet came on. He wasn't in the schedule of acts.

I was shocked to find out the station is now something completely different (which shouldn't surprise me, but since it was my favorite station...)

The "spirit" and perhaps some of the music collection from WHFS might have moved to WNRN in Charlottesville VA, which is turning into a large network of stations in central and Southwestern VA. They focus mainly on new stuff, NRN means New Rock Now, and their style is perhaps more aggressive than WHFS was, but not as bad as WHFS now. I don't know if you could hear it in NOVA or not. For me, the Internet provides consolation with Live365 etcetera, but I miss hearing such a wide assortment, from Tlot Tlot to Pere Ubu to the background music for the porn flick Cafe Flesh (ever see a porn flick with choreographed dance scenes?)

The Hotrats was/is two dudes from Supergrass who perform only covers. I'm pretty sure I'm right about this.

EDIT: Oh, you are talking about a long time ago. The above statement stands, and is correct, but not relevant to what you are seeking.

HFS-tival is back, though, even without the radio station playing rock. It's now at Merriweather Post Pavilion though, and not RFK.

This sounds likely. Some of the DJs were partial to Zappa and would slip a little in every now and then.

And yes, WHFS was fantastic even though reception in NoVa could be spotty. It was a shame when I had been away for a while and when I was back for a visit, it had gone all corporate.

We have a few small community stations here in Southern Indiana that are really carrying on the banner of independent broadcasting. WFHB in Bloomington and WHUM in Columbus.

Well they really had me going. For 25 years! I still haven't outright rejected the alternate reality theory.
