Here is a link to an interesting article on how online games may be used to make scientific discoveries:

In this example, gamers played Foldit, an online game that allows players to collaborate and compete in predicting the structure of protein molecules. In three weeks, gamers solved the structure of a retrovirus enzyme whose configuration had stumped scientists for more than a decade.
