omg...gamers really are going to save the world!
Some telling quotes from the article:

Agence France Presse wrote:

It is believed to be the first time that gamers have resolved a long-standing scientific problem.

This in relation to an online computer game called Foldit developed by the University of Washington in which gamers play a game of unravelling amino acids to reveal potential targets for drugs, in this case an Aids enzyme.

It had been attempted by the scientific community many times before (not the game but trying to solve this issue) without success. Gamers cracked it in THREE weeks....which leads to this quote:

Agence France Presse wrote:
"The ingenuity of game players is a formidable force that, if properly directed, can be used to solve a wide range of scientific problems."

Brilliant. I think it speaks volumes to how a gamers mind works, and why playing games is a valuable tool for intellectual development.

Very neat - it sounds like a real success.

From the full Nature article (http://www.nature.com/nsmb/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nsmb.2...)

"Foldit player spvincent (yellow) used partial threading with the Alignment Tool and quickly improved the starting NMR model (red) to have much better agreement with the crystal structure later determined (blue). Another teammate, grabhorn, was able to improve spvincent's model (magenta), particularly in the core of the protein, and another teammate, mimi, was able to generate an even more accurate model (green) by correctly tucking in the loop at the top left."

How's that for a session report?

This is indeed very cool. I should note that the gamers cracked the structure of an HIV-like enzyme (the structure of HIV protease has been known for some time and indeed there are drugs on the market that make use of that structure). It was actually the Mason-Pfizer monkey retroviral protease, which has some odd features that made it hard to solve.

It was interesting that the gamers only wanted their screen handles used, not their real names. Made me wonder whether any of the gamers involved might have had jobs at the science labs which had been struggling with this for 10 years, and had been playing during work hours. Now that would be ironic!

I found that a little bit odd, too, and wondered why it was done that way.

Coincidentally, I'm in the middle of reading Jane McGonigal's book, "Reality is Broken". This is exactly the kind of thing she has been proposing.
