Awesome. I'm starting to get in a groove with certain games with practicing them on iPhone, and then not having any rules re-learning downtime when I teach the "real" game. Tikal has benefited from this for me. The AI is not extremely challenging, but it's still fun to play, and it keeps the rules fresh, and easy to get the real game to the table ...

what about normal online gaming? Have some far away friends, who will love it! We usually only meet on christmas, so I try to tie them in with the real game and pull them to online gaming if we get a platform.

This brings up a good question: why are most boardgame ports to iOS instead of other platforms?

My assessment is that the development takes longer than we might expect it to to get rid of bugs.

The android market has only been around a short time with the ability to easily purchase apps, all from one location. Developers haven't had a lot of time to respond to this.

Just like there have been waves of new things designed for the apple operating system once the market proved solid for those releases, we will probably see the same type of waves of responses for the android operating system.

Um, the Market has been the primary way to buy and install apps already starting from the first Android phone in 2008. More likely it's due to Android apps not really selling that well in general (e.g. the Carcassonne app has sold only 5000-10000 copies; and that's still rather successful by the standards of the Market. Poor little Through the Desert is in the 100-500 installs bracket).

Money, mostly, and the variety of Android devices out there, all of which are a little different. The marketplace is more difficult as a developer, as well, with a very direct interaction between the developer and the customer (unlike Apple, which basically handles everything once the app is in their hands).

The information I've seen is a multiplier of about twenty for Android vs. iOS sales. I'm a small Apple developer and looked into porting an app or two to Android, but the dollars didn't make sense -- it is a lot more profitable to get another iOS app out the door rather than port to Android.

There are some developers making money on Android apps but they seem to be the exceptions. However, as the markets change, so will developers.

I would love to see the numbers for FFG's Hey That's My Fish, which is a polished app and was released on the same day, at the same price, for both operating systems. The site market.android.com shows HTMF at 100-500 installs, which is shocking if accurate.

I can't wait to see Eclipse! Both the meatspace and electronic version!

Thanks for the detailed info. I personally dislike the way Apple controls its customers and hence don't buy their products, but I see their practices does have some benefits, at least for developers.

*yawn* Wasn't it the Windows fraction that was claimed to be ignorant towards other platforms?

There are a whole lot of people who have excellent development experiences with .NET, and all needed GFX, sounds and engine routines will already exist after the development of the iOS version to create obvious synergy effects. There are also excellent marketplace features on the WP7 platform. So where is the point?

I don't like this religious platform bashing thing, but I think it is healthy to have a market where you can chose from different alternatives and approaches. These are inspiring each other, so it is good to have all iOS, Android and WP7. The credo "There shall only be my chosen one belief!" is contraproductive for end customers and very short-sighted in my eyes.

(Disclaimer: I am a professional .NET programmer myself, so maybe I'm a bit biased.)

What are you talking about? Was there "bashing" in that link?

The point is simply that (according to analysts) there's no market on Windows and no prospect of one. It's just not worth the effort.

If you really want to know, contact me via GM. Judging by your overtext and microbadge, I'm treating this as a religious/political discussion that will very quickly violate BGG's rules for civl discussion, so I'm not even going to start.

What are you talking about? This is a perfectly civil discussion about the simple fact that the Windows phone market is small, and that that's probably why few things get ported there.
