Subject: any essential Groo reading? rss

Groo fans, I need your help!

Having recently stumbled into 1.5 copies of the game, I'm hoping to rebuild my comic collection a little bit. Giving other potential players background into the character will make the game easier to table, and re-reading myself will be enjoyable. But where to start?

I found decent prices on the following and have them coming:
* The Death of Groo - Isn't there an expansion card that references this story?
* Groo: The Nursery (4 issue reprint collection) - Should help to explain the harbor special text.
* The Groo Library (4 issue reprint collection) - Don't even know what's inside, but it was cheap. Hopefully will help to introduce some of the characters and themes?

So what am I missing? My nephews are just about the right age to start reading these comics, and of course I'm still a nostalgic kid at heart.

I reckon you can pretty much dive in anywhere!
A familiarity with the comic is not essential to play the game but I definitely think it enhances the enjoyment.
I played a couple of games recently with a friend, who was not familiar with the comic - it was quite good fun but it did lack a certain Groo-ness.
Obviously having more players would've helped too, as any fool can can plainly see! whistle
Anyway, I'd go ahead and pick up whatever you can find at a reasonable price. The recent Hell on Earth 4 part series and the Hogs of Horder 4 part series should still be quite easily available.

Absolutely true, but for startes I would suggest the older ones!

Groo Houndbook, Groo & Rufferto, Groo Kingdom ... most of the old compilations are still available in my FLGS.

The lastest two (Hogs of Horder, Hell on Earth) were not that good ... IMHO ...

I also agree, the early ones are the best. I own the entire series which is quite a stack. But as the years progressed, the series became more political commentary and less mindless killing and women in skimpy outfits!

I agree.
I'm always happy to see a new Groo issue #1 on the shelves though!

Had a look for this yesterday.
Looks like it might have been delayed.
Sigh...

I finally got issue 1 last week and can't wait for the next 3. Wow, my previous post is over 2 years old. It certainly has been delayed a long time!

I found it humorous that I haven't read anything Groo in over 20 years but I still remember that running joke. I loved the comics back in the day.

If anyone is looking for some essential reading of the original Groo comic books plus an unopened box of Groo trading cards, I have a set of all the originals including the Pacific, Eclipse, Epic/Marvel series as well as his short appearances in Destroyer Duck, Star Slayers, Epic Illustrated, etc.... I was an avid collector at the time.
