Whilst browsing the geek, I will occasionally come across a surprising & often revealing comment that gives us a clue on how old some of our fellow geeks are.

The classic is: "I bought Tactics when it first came out and play it to death at University."

Just wondering how many of you are over 80 years old and what was your earliest memory of wargaming that really reveals you age? How has our hobby changed in your eyes, for the better or worst?

(Now that I know your age... I will give you the respect you deserve! )

I'm 50. My earliest "wargames" were with plastic cowboys and indians - there's a photograph of me playing in the garden with some, aged about 3. My first board wargame would have been Campaign, bought when I was 10 or 11. Although I was interested in the SPI wargames that were advertised inside my Military Modelling magazines, I had no opponents and no idea of how to get hold of the games. My first "proper" wargame was The Russian Campaign, bought when I was 23 and had a willing opponent and a local source of games.

Generally, the hobby/lifestyle/obsession has changed for the better. There are far more games available, of better component quality than their predecessors. The advent of the internet means that opponents can be found more readily, as can game errata, and online gaming systems such as Vassal mean that one can theoretically play a game at any hour against people on the other side of the world. The best of the new games are the equal of their venerated ancestors. Potential purchases can be checked out on sites such as BGG so as not to inadvertently buy a dog.

The downside for me personally is the steadily climbing price of new games, which means that most of my purchases are made via Ebay.

In dog years I think I'd be older than Ben Franklin -- not sure if that counts though.

38.

Sidenote: I just typed "38", and the post was rejected for being too short. "38." passes. So remember, 3 characters good, 2 characters bad.

I'm not even yet 17.

That's right. Twenty years from now, people like us will be the grumpies on the CSW forums.

And CoH and CC will be "classics"! Waragames age very quickly, don't they.

You wouldn't have to be 80 to remember the first modern wargames. I was an 8 yearl old when Charles Roberts published Tactics II. I was playing chess and devising my own battle games with miniatures by then - if I'd have known such a game existed I'd have been all over it.

Tactics, the granddaddy of them all, came out when I was 4, and I'm only 61. As it turned out, I never discovered Avalon Hill until I was 19, so I can only claim 40-odd years in the hobby.

Just about finished 49 orbits around the sun.

Or to be more precise, slightly over 158,179,000 seconds old.

I claim to be full of grace, my wife will only go so far as to agree that I'm full of something.
