We seem to argue about this every time we play and I cant find anything in the rules which says otherwise but can land based planes i.e. bombers and fighter attack ships?

My friend lost his hard earned transports last time we played as he only escorted it with a couple of ships. I flew in a couple of fighters and sank them before they even reached Japan. He was not happy.

Personally I think it was a legal move but to be honest it seemed a bit to easy. Perhaps he should just learn to support transport with a carrier???

In future I think we will play that the only planes that can take part in a sea battle are those on carriers. Or land planes can only attack ships if they also have a ship present in the battle.

How to you guys play?

You ARE allowing the ships to shoot back, right? Planes against ships work the same as all other combat and the transports are only sunk ponce you've destroyed all the escorting ships. When within range of land-based air it pays to have a large naval force escorting it, preferably with a couple of battleships. While bombers can do a lot of damage, they're expensive and if the naval force has a couple of DDs to soak up hits it can be too expensive to send in a bomber raid.

Show your friend how the Fighters on Midway attacked the Japanese carrier force and why the transports beat a hasty retreat once the Japanese carriers were sunk. Also, Japanese land based bombers attacked and sunk the battleship Prince of Wales and battlecruiser Repulse off the coast of Malaysia in the opening days of the war.
