Introduction: Doorways To Adventure is a VCR bidding game focused on become the richest player by the end of the tape by collecting more treasures than the rest of your opponents. This can be done by winning biddings, stealing from other players or playing cards that give you treasure automatically.

Mechanics: Each player starts off with a certain amount of cash, based on the number of players, 5 power (blue) cards and 3 bidding (orange) cards.

Power Cards: There are several types of power cards
a) Ransom cards: which are either a potion, charm, food, clothing or shield which
are used to pay your entrance fee into a bidding round.

b)Steal a treasure with fire or water cards: Whenever you see fire on the VCR clip you may steal a treasure from another player by playing a “steal treasure with fire card”. Or likewise see water and play a “steal treasure with water card”. These cards can be played anytime during a clip where water or fire was seen.

c)Steal the Key Cards: These cards allow you to have possession of “THE KEY” which allows you to enter any bidding, without having to pay the ransom, the entrance fee.

d)Ransom and Treasure cards: These cards have either a potion, charm, food, clothing or shield on them and allow you to play this card as the ransom entrance fee, yet at the same time automatically give you a treasure. This could allow a player to play a ransom and treasure card, where as he would receive a treasure immediately, and then go into the bidding contest and win again. Therefore a player could gain two treasures in one round.

Bidding Cards:
a) Sure thing (Almost) card: while in the bidding round if you play, one of these cards you automatically get a treasure, along with the bidding winner, as long as no one else plays the sure thing card too. If two or more sure thing cards are played in the same bidding round, the card’s effect is cancelled.

b) Normal Bidding Cards: these cards have a value from $2,000 to $8,000. These are used as the bids in the bidding phase of the game (described later).

The first player then rolls the coloured dice and advances the tape to the first doorway with that colour or moves ahead the tape by the amount it says on the dice. A short video clip, from movies and televisions shows that would be considered quite dated today, plays and the treasure that will be up for bidding is announced.

Players then decided if they want to bid on this treasure.

4 types of Treasures exist;
A) Art Objects
B) Jewelry
C) Deeds to Property
D) Precious Metals

Each treasure type has its own initial value. As you increase the number of treasures you own in each category, the total collection of that type of treasure is worth more than each of them individually. I.e. Your first property is worth 12,000 however 2 properties are worth 30,000.

Each category of treasure, Max’s out at a different value. This means that one category may grow in value very quickly, but it doesn’t have a very high maximum value, while another category would gain value slowly at first but have a very large maximum value. This means players must try to strategize over which treasures they are trying to collect in order to maximize their worth.

To enter the bidding a certain ransom will be demanded by the video clip. If you have the key you don’t have to pay any ransom and automatically qualify for the bidding round. When you do not have the blue power card ransom needed you may pay the price, given by the clip, to still enter into the bidding round. At this time players select up to two orange bid cards and put them face down on the table waiting for all other entered players to do the same. The cards are then revealed. The highest bidder wins and receives a treasure. Also if only one “sure thing card” was played that player receives a treasure also. All the bid cards are discarded. And players can take up to 4 cards to replinish to a maximum of 8 cards.

Play continues this way until the end of the video, where the net worth of all the players is calculated and a winner is declared.

Contents: The money is you standard monopoly quality money and therefore is easily damaged, but also can easily be replaced by homemade cash, (no, not all your failed counterfeit 20 dollar bills). The cards and treasures are all on card stock and are firm enough for the amount of times my group will actually place this.

The part of the game most likely to die first is of course the VCR tape itself and therefore you should all create a copy to use or DVD it like others suggest. Otherwise this game will become obsolete a lot faster than you want it too.


Impressions: My game group decided that this was an excellent break from your standard board game. All though it took us an hour to get through the instructions, as we kept getting distracted by the television in front of us, the rules where pretty easy to learn.

The game is very simple and therefore, there is not much variety in the play. The video clips in the game are amusing and nostalgic, but are mostly just to be a nice a background for the treasure being presented. But like anything visually based once you have seen it once you don’t really need to see it again.

However it was quite fun, especially when all of a sudden 3 of you would lash out with steal water cards and create quite a commotion, as items are stolen from everywhere or as players fight over the key.


This game will be a break from our actual “board” games but will never be a staple of our games nights. However the real enjoyment of the game, like a lot of games comes form who you are playing with and how they play.
