I was just goofing around on another thread here and it got me thinking:

If you could pick just one year as "your prime"; one year where you were basically the happiest, or luckiest, or most-blessed of your entire life so far, what would it be?

I turned 50 yesterday. I'm in better shape now (healthier and more active) than I was when I was 25.
I got married when I was 26. I had some really great childhood days, but also some spectacularly bad ones as well.
So I'm going to pick a year later in my life, since I think I've hit my prime already, a while ago now.

My choice: 1989
27 years old. The highlights:
Married for a year
Good job, good pay; I can walk to work in ten minutes.
New baby (girl) arrives in late April.
The local NHL hockey team (Calgary Flames) wins the Stanley Cup soon afterward
By October we've gone from being in a rental house to a "owning" a new home, in a new neighborhood
In November I trade an old mattress for two tickets to a Les Miz performance at the local theatre
I have ten days off of work (paid holiday) from December 22 until the Monday after New Year's day

What year were you in your prime, and why?

While it would be nice to be younger, I don't want to have to go back and re-learn all the stuff I know now. I'll stay right here.

1995.

I was still in college and switched majors from one that bored me rotten to one that made me happy.

I moved into a new house with great roommates and had the most fun of my life that year.

My first niece was born. Being an uncle rocks.

I had recently discovered how easy and fun lifting weights was (compared to running, which I'd been doing since high school) and I looked like a Norse god.

I met the woman I'd one day marry.

H'm, I'd like to take 2002 because it was the birth of my first daughter but the problem is that I also came down with pneumonia that year so it clearly wasn't my peak healthwise.

So as a backup, I declare my prime to be today! So there!

Can I say before age 25? Honestly, after that everything started going downhill fast.

Definitely 2011. My first child was born this week. He's sound asleep right now and after a few sleepless nights, I finally got to get up on my own and sit in front of the computer at 1:30 a.m. by choice. He's perfect and beautiful and everything I thought he would be!

We also adopted our second cat this year. Life is pretty much perfect right now. Other than the fact I don't have a beer in front of me.

I think I'll rectify that right now.

I'd love the body of 23, but I love where I am now more than any other time in my life, and I've had a really good life.

Oh no. Everything got better, but I see what you're asking, so I guess that makes 2011 the best year.
