When I discovered the Battles of the American Revolution a couple of years ago, I thought that was way too cool that the games fit together as one system of rules with short rule sets for each game.

Then I read the rules to Patton's 3rd Army: The Lorraine Campaign and have it set up on the table, and I see it is part of the Victory in the West series.

What are some other game systems that use the core rulebook with specific rules for each game?

Thanks.

This is a blatant example of frivolous geek gold spending.

Operational Combat Series, Tactical Combat Series, and Standard Combat Series from The Gamers/MMP come immediately to my mind.

There are TONS. GBoH and Musket & Pike are some other
recent ones (though GBoH is iffier - as is the SCS).

SPI specialized in these. Think the quads -
they were at the heart of the idea.

Europa.

This would be more fun if we had to do

Some ex-SPI designer (Costikyan?) wrote an article about SPI games development, and even their non-series games were created by starting with an existing rulebook and changing as little as possible.

I agree that SPI did that alot. The 'Quads' were an obvious one - there were two substantially different versions initially. One 'version' was used for Napoleonic and ACW battles (e.g. Napoleon at War: Four Battles, Napoleon's Last Battles, Blue & Gray,Blue & Gray II) the other was used for WWII and post-WWII (e.g. Westwall: Four Battles to Germany, Island War: Four Pacific Battles, Modern Battles: Four Contemporary Conflicts, Modern Battles II: Four Contemporary Conflicts). The latter Quads started to diverge from this, with rather different systems, e.g. Thirty Years War (first edition).

Then there were other games where the success spawned subsequent titles using the same system. For instance Leipzig was followed by La Grande Armée and 1812. Terrible Swift Sword and Panzergruppe Guderian both ultimately generated a 'family' of games based on the same system as a result of their success.

I use my Europa - modules with the Master Europa Rules. ONE ruleset for all of the games - you just leave out what you don't need (like the rules for Beachhead Landings). Fabulous.

One ruleset to rule them all and in the darkness bind them.

Playing europa in the dark (much less reading the rules
that way) sounds like a poor choice.

I just meant to bind the ruleset in the dark, not to play it in the dark.

Musket & Pike Battle Series contains a Series Rulebook.

I don't think I'd include GBoH as each module has it's own rulebook, there isn't a Series Rulebook. Just a similarity with the ruleset and scale etc.
