My gaming group are big fans of ‘Race for the Galaxy’. So far I’ve notched up 48 games so far and still enjoy the game a great deal. We will usually use ‘Race’ to end an evening for some nice relaxing solitaire style play.

Two friends and I decided to give the game a slight twist. We gave a tourney a go! The rules (very casually sorted out) were:
• Each tourney would be made up of 3 games
• Each game a player would randomly chose a starting world
• No player can have the same starting world twice.
• The player’s 3 game scores will be added together to form their final overall score.
• In the case of a tie then a player’s number of wins will be used. If there is still a tie then the player who had the highest individual game score.

In each game the format is:

Player name; score; theme of their tableau; starting world.

1st Tourney

1st Game

Ben; 35; Mining; Alpha Centauri
Matt; 35; Windfall; Old Earth
Tom; 23; Gene; Epsilon Eridani

2nd Game

Tom; 36; Windfall; Old Earth
Matt; 31; Consume; Earth’s Lost Colony
Ben; 28; Gene and Alien; New Sparta

3rd Game

Matt; 39; Militaristic Economy; New Sparta
Tom; 28; Gene; Earth’s Lost Colony
Ben; 23; Novelty; Old Earth

Result:

1st Matt 105
2nd Tom 86
3rd Ben 86

2nd Tourney

1st Game

Ben; 32; Novelty; Earth’s Lost Colony
Matt; 31; Militaristic Economy; Epsilon Eridani
Tom; 28; Mining Consumption; Alpha Centauri

2nd Game

Tom; 46; Military; New Sparta
Matt; 34; Gene Production; Alpha Centauri
Ben; 27; Developments; Epsilon Eridani

3rd Game

Ben; 27; Developments; Alpha Centauri
Matt; 24; All round; Earth’s Lost Colony
Tom; 20; Novelty; Old Earth

Results:

1st Tom 94
2nd Matt 89
3rd Ben 86

Matt’s results:
• 39
• 35
• 34
• 31
• 31
• 24

Tom’s results:
• 46
• 36
• 28
• 28
• 23
• 20

Ben’s results:
• 35
• 32
• 28
• 27
• 27
• 23

Conclusion

I’d really recommend anyone giving these little tourneys a go. It didn’t take long and it really gave every player something to play for. Even if you could see that this particular game was lost, you fought for every victory point you could because it would add to your overall score.

Just another reason to keep playing this great game

That does sound like fun. One thing I often do is not repeat worlds unless all of them have been used.

I would estimate that playing through a 3 game tournament took just over an hour. Perhaps slightly longer if you factor in us hashing out the rules, but it was a very quick experience.

We are all pretty experienced 'Race' players with around 50 plays each, so that is a big factor.
