I love it when game publishers/designers/artists include inside jokes in their games. For a list of inside jokes and self-referential humour in other games (with pictures), see this list:

mb Games with Inside Jokes for Gamers: A Definitive Pictorial List

Belfort has some great examples, and the purpose of this thread is to try to identify them all. Here are the ones I have noticed:

1. The five resources from Settlers of Catan being sold by the Robber (artwork detail on District board)

2. The dragon from the logo of publisher Tasty Minstrel (artwork detail on District board)

3. A crashed Scout ship from the game Terra Prime (artwork detail on District board)

4. The BGG user name of Tasty Minstrel's Seth Jaffee (sedjtroll) (artwork detail on Clipboard)

5. A Canadian maple leaf (artwork detail for Autumn on Clipboard, presumably a sly reference to the fact that the designers and artist are all Canadian)

And there are more!

Are there more easter eggs in Belfort? There must be more than the ones mentioned here - I just haven't been clever enough to find them all yet! (in fact my children picked up most of the ones that are mentioned above). But rumour has it that the Order of the Stick gang makes an appearance somewhere on the game board, and that there's another reference to Terra Prime somewhere in the game too. I suspect there's several more, because clearly there's some quite creative minds at work here!

Please post here if you find other inside jokes in the game's artwork! You can see the entire board here, although given the microscopic details your best bet might be to study the game components themselves.

thumbsup Major kudos to artist Josh Cappel and the rest of the Belfort team for their great sense of humor and creativity!

Edit: See the thread below for the following additional items:

6. The Order of the Stick gang
(artwork detail on District board)
7. Artist Josh Cappel's signature (artwork detail on Building cards and Clipboard)
8. Coin from Terra Prime (artwork detail on player board)
9. Michael Mindes selling Tasty Minstrel Games (artwork detail on District board)
10. Gatehouse guard reading the rules of Belfort (artwork detail on District board)
11. BGG's mascot Ernie outside a Tower (artwork detail on District board)
12. Dray beasts from Conquest of the Fallen Lands(artwork detail on District board)
13. Letters TMG being fashioned by Blacksmith (artwork detail on District board)

You're in line at the recruiter's desk? The elf farthest back in line, with the axe over his shoulder?

EDIT 11/16/2011: Upon further reflection, I think this might actually be Seth Jaffee

And could this also be a subtle reference to FallCon, the Canadian Games Con that always occurs in the Autumn?

BTW you can read more about Belfort and a few other great games from Canadian designers in issue 3 of Meeple Syrup on the www.GameArtisans.ca website:

Does this count? It looks like some guy got locked up in the tower in my copy of the game!

And here's another easter egg find, courtesy of Douglas Catchpole:

Here's another small easter egg that Josh has been kind enough to disclose after our attempts to figure out the fine print of the text on the Building Permits:

7. Artist Josh Cappel's signature (artwork detail on Building cards and Clipboard)

The `signature scrawl' on the artwork here (which is also featured on the calendar board in black and white) is part of Josh Cappel's actual signature. His signature is also scratched into the table on the bottom left of the calendar board.

So what's the rest of the fine print of the text on the Building Permits? See the comments under this image for some suggestions.

If you look carefully on the player aide, you'll notice some currency that's not exactly "current"

I see it! Top-middle edge of the board. It's a coin from Terra Prime. Nice.

I'm still working my way through the rules and you guys are doing this??? Wow.

After checking hospital and CIA records, I have come to believe Michael's middle name is Belfort.

Nice catch! Here's the artwork:

So have we nearly exhausted the list of inside jokes Josh/Jay/Sen, or are there still several more to be found?

Offhand I can think of at least three more. One is another Tasty Minstrel reference, one is a BGG reference, and one is a callback to the first game project I ever worked on.

There might be others as well.

Hint: The first game Josh worked on was published by ASSA.

(I don't think that's much of a hint, really...but it's the best I can give without telling people outright)

Also in this same image, check out the ruler in the top left corner. It is very thoughtful of the ruler-making guild to use 100% Ent-Free wood. Treebeard approves.

It's the kind of attention to detail and humor that's found throughout the game. I love it!

Apparently, there's a circular reference to the Belfort game components on one of the Gatehouses...and by circular, I don't mean Elf tokens...

Look for a Goon (one of the guard creatures) reading the rule book for Belfort somewhere in the city. It's not superclear, but it's there!

9. Michael Mindes selling Tasty Minstrel Games (artwork detail on District board)

I think he's nailed it. In fact, I'll go one step further and suggest that the two games in question are Terra Prime and Train of Thought.

Well how about it Michael, don't you think someone has earned your 5GG by now?

Eureka! One of my children found this one:

These Goons appear to be rather diligent rules lawyers - here's his brother on another Gatehouse, also busy studying the Belfort rule book!
