I've been reading reviews on some recent dungeon crawl games but I realized that I'm a bit tired of fantasy themed dungeon crawls. What I would really like is a science fiction dungeon crawl/action game.

I would like a game where you can defeat lots of different monsters, gather items or abilities, increase levels, etc.

I guess it wouldn't even have to be science fiction. I played Mansions of Madness for the first time this week and it was pretty fun. We got to kill monsters and gather items and abilities. Science Fiction would be my first choice though.

I bet if I crammed together just about any fantasy dungeon game with a copy of space hulk the end result would be fantastic.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Doom: The Boardgame.

+1 Space Crusade, especially with the expansions. The original and the best.

+1 for Gears of War. Great co-op... doesn't require a DM. Only items it's missing from your list is 'no increasing levels' But otherwise it's good times.

Get Space Crusade. It is readily available second hand. It is great.

The expansions add a little but generally aren't worth that much.
Don't get Advanced Space Crusade, it is a step backwards overall.

Agree with Pauli, Space Crusade is a great game, don't bother with Advanced though...

I don't love it, but I think The Isle of Doctor Necreaux fits much of your criteria.

Maybe some Zombie games? Zombie in my Pocket is a super lightweight example. There might be richer ones.

What about Fortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger Game or Sentinels of the Multiverse? I haven't read enough about either to know if they approach what you are asking for.

Doom: The Boardgame ticks all these boxes. Space Hulk is a classic but doesn't feature any collecting of items or character leveling.

How about
Tannhäuser
or
Claustrophobia

Both of these are more tactical minis combat than dungeon crawl, but you did say action.

For the record, Descent (one of the go-to dungeon crawls) was based on Doom. It's the obvious choice here, I think.

If you want something more like Castle Ravenloft &c, Gears of War is a good pick.

Neither Fortune and Glory nor Sentinels is at all close to what I would call a dungeon crawl. Fortune and Glory is an adventure game, and has more in common mechanically with Arkham Horror than Descent. Sentinels of the Multiverse is a co-op card game, and has more in common with Magic: the Gathering than Munchkin. Don't get me wrong, I love SotM it just doesn't really seem to fit the criteria at all.

Last Night on Earth and its pseudo-sequel Invasion from Outer Space aren't exactly dungeon crawls, but they do have characters you move around on a map and power up by finding gear and drawing cards. It hits the points you list but IMO in order to really capture the dungeon crawl vibe you need to be exploring a hostile environment and these don't really hit that for me. If the exploration isn't important to you these could potentially work. The deliberately campy b-movie theme is absolutely delicious, though. If you like cheesy sci-fi or zombie movies these are must-play games regardless of whether they're quite what you're looking for here.

I love Earth Reborn, but it is definitely a game you have to devote A LOT of time to learning and playing, and need to know someone willing to do that with you.
