In my bedroom, there now sits a box.

At first, it was just an innocuous box, underneath a blanket my wife put in the corner.

A few days later, it was joined by another.

Plain brown corrugated cardboard of no immediate note.

Then on the weekend - a larger box consumed the smaller ones.

Now, there in the corner, sat a larger box. And on it - a sign.

"Don't Touch".

The cats wander to it and sniff indifferently.

I do not touch it.

Over the next few days, every now and then, the box would be moved. Some other item placed inside.

Then - more boxes.

No attempt has been made to hide the source of some of the boxes now. On the sides, stamped logos of game companies. WizKids. FFG. Labels have been left in plain sight. Return addresses plainly visible. MiniatureMarket. CCGArmory.

In my bedroom, there are boxes.

Left by my wife as a squat teasing temple of what awaits for the coming holidays.

She knows I will not touch them. The sign commands it.

And they sit, mocking me, filled with roaring monsters, soaring spaceships, horrors undreamed, adventurous battle and fabulous treasures, much like the boxes themselves.

They taunt me each night with the secret promises of nights of laughter, aggravation, fun and family.

The boxes shift and grow and change every few days.

The holidays approach and anticipation builds like some ancient volcano waiting to burst.

I love the torture and the guessing and the interminable waiting.

In my bedroom...

there is a box.

Sam's presents are in the bottom of my closet - he can see the boxes when the door is open, but he doesn't touch. He usually has my gifts sent to his office, but one arrived at home the other day, and is next to his side of the bed.

I don't want happiness by halves, nor is half of sorrow what I want. Yet there's a pillow I would share, where gently pressed against a cheek like a helpless star, a falling star, a ring glimmers on the finger of a hand.

That would put me crazy!

Can't you at least put them in the closet, out of sight out of mind and all that balony.

This site needs a forum where we can put the faux offended so we can ignore them.

The real pain comes next week when she asks you to help tape up the box and take it to the post office.

Then says to you you "I really enjoyed doing the BGG Secret Santa this year, I hope they like the gifts"

Put a blanket over it and add a lamp. Pretend it's an end table. What you can't see can't hurt you.

Do you want to know pain?

I work an earlier shift than my wife, so I'm always the one checking out front for packages, when I get home.

So, I get to bring in the house the games my wife has ordered for me. And then she lets them sit in the corner of the den for a day or two, so they can gloat in full view, before finally getting around to hiding them in her bedroom closet.

Two days ago, it was from Noble Knight, and was very heavy. Damn, I think, it's Lost Battles. I could be punching that and reading the book, by now. Sigh.

What a coincidence, there was a woman on Long Island that asked me to forward any empty boxes I received from online game retailers.
