In the early game, the ogre has no incentive to fight knights with no gems. Thus, it is in the interest of the knights to stall the game early on to collect more cards. This drags the game considerably.

To apply a bit more pressure early game, I suggest the following rules:

"After determining the outcome of a battle, if the losing side does not have a gem to give, the winner receives a card from the loser"

The card can be selected either randomly or at the choice of the loser. A random selection would put a lot more pressure on the knights, while chosen would reduce the luck factor.

If the ogre is able to win early fights, it not only still gets an additional card, but also reduce the hand size of some knight, which makes it a better outcome than simply drawing a card.

Do keep me posted on this.

Another incentive is to not reshuffle the spell discards if the draw deck is exhausted. This also can help speed the game up a bit. When the spells run out the knights are at a disadvantage.
