Edited to add: ***25 geek gold*** to the first person who can find a solution. It's administered by ISTS. Another hour of googling still hasn't helped.

I'm desperately seeking help!! I'm trying to finish a scholarship application. It required several essays and supplied a textbox for each. I finally finished all of 'em, only to find that how I typed it is not how it appears. The empty line to create a paragraph break has been lost. Instead of getting a well organized 3 paragraph essay, I get a blob of text - for all 9 essays.

I've been googling and googling and can't find a thing about how to make paragraph breaks.

HTML tags p and br have each resulted in error that prevents display.

I'm using Chrome.

Any ideas?

Try Shift+Enter where you want the separation.

Nope, but thanks for trying.

I find it very hard to believe that it won't allow any kind of formatting. Paragraphs are a critical part of writing a well-structured essay.

There's no help or faq or anything like that I can find on the website either.

You might try a double line break or <br>

As a last resort, you might just insert something that stands out. ***Paragraph Break*** I suppose it could be part of the test.

Have you tried using a different browser like Mozilla Firefox? I don't know if that will help.

Re: Help! Web form - trying to create paragraphs
I tried both multiple Enters and multiple spaces in order to create breaks, but both get stripped out.

I actually did read that on Blackboard someone had trouble with paragraphs but got the formatting to work in Firefox. I downloaded it and tried there, but still no luck.

HTML tags cause an error on the page, so both < p > and< br > are impossible.

If it's part of the test, I'm failing it miserably.

As a last resort, I plan to do something similar to your suggestion. Create a break, and then use the first text box (and the submission email) to explain that I couldn't make paragraph breaks work and am instead using ******** or whatever.

Can you usa a little css (defining a style) to define the tag to have extra space below (and/or) above it?

If multiple spaces get stripped out, try the code for a non-breaking space & nbsp; (This forum actually reads it, so put the & right before the n with no space). If it doesn't like HTML code, it may not like that (or may not interpret it as anything other than standard text.

Worst case scenario, you just leave it as one big blob of text. Is it your fault they are ignorant on creating a web application? I think not.

I like the asterisk idea, but maybe use dashes ( - - - - - ) or periods ( . . . . . . . ) instead. Colons? ( : : : : : : : )

Perhaps at the very least you can add some pilcrows (¶)to the text? Auto-formatting sucks.

It sounds like it's stripping out all of your enters?

or is it just stripping one of any double enters?

It sounds like you've tried shift-enter, how about ctrl-enter?

You can also try to enter a single line feed character with Alt+10 or a carriage return with Alt+13.

Or put one after the other CRLF

But you'll probably just get some weird characters like these:

I would do the following:

I would CALL them and explain the problem. Perhaps they have a solution. If not, then ask for the person who is handling these applications. If that person does not have an answer, then suggest the following solutions: (a) mailing them the texts, (b) placing the texts somewhere online and just put a link in the textbox. If they say: "Just use the textbox", then start each text with "(Because formatting was not possible using the online application, I have started each paragraph with three stars)", then insert "***" everywhere you want to start a new paragraph.

But calling them comes first. Make yourself known.

Good ideas all, but none worked.

It is stripping out all enters and all space characters that occur in groups of greater than 2. css, ctrl+enter, alt+10 and alt+13 all failed.

I emailed the support for the website - no answers. No phone to call.

I ended up using ** in the empty line that would otherwise occur between block paragraphs. I explained that in the first essay textbox. Luckily, this happened to be the only one that I wasn't bumping up against the word limit. I also included my explanation in the email to the college counselor who's nominating students from my school. She didn't know how to fix it either.

Thanks for everyone's efforts - I very much appreciate the help!
