On our Saturday session, Eric Syrdal, Jay Ouzts, Lenny Leo, Ashton & Darren Arnold and your scribe (Greg Schloesser) played another match of Assassin using the Westbank Gamers Variants. The match clearly showed the effects of the variants, with over a dozen ‘hits’. Further, the game was hotly contested and was won on the very last move of the game.

Eric got off to an early lead with a massive hit against Darren in London using a gun card and earning him 300 points. He became the man to catch throughout the match. Your scribe stayed close on his heels through much of the game, based mainly on the strength of two 200-point hits and visits to many of Europe’s cities. Darren, too, remained close, mostly through his many travels. Lenny and Jay seemed to be well back in the pack for most of the game, but came on strong near the end. Jay was crowned King of Travel Agents, having visited and scored points in eight cities.

Ashton, meanwhile, languished most of the game in Berlin, one of his four ‘hit’ cities, waiting for a Legitimate Target card. This proved to be poor strategy, as a ‘hit’ in one of a players four cities yields 100 points, while reaching destinations yield 50 points each. Thus, it is always better to keep on the move, scoring points for destinations reached while one awaits the opportunity to make a ‘hit’.

As the deck dwindled and the end of the game was in sight, Eric was feeling more and more confident in victory, having amassed 800 points. His nearest competitor was your scribe with 700 points. Three Gun cards had already been played, so the game could end at any time with the play of the fourth.

That was when Darren struck. Reaching Madrid, Darren masterfully made another assassination, using the fourth and final Gun card. However, his hit was modified by the play of several ‘Innocent Bystander’ cards. It appeared Eric had claimed the victory. His jubilation was short-lived, however, as Darren gleefully revealed that he had successfully scored hits in all four of his ‘hit’ cities, earning a bonus of 200 points and claiming the victory with 850 points. A master stroke!

The final tally was:

Darren: 850; Eric: 800; Greg: 700; Jay: 500; Lenny: 500; Ashton: 200

For those gamers who have yet to try Assassin using our Westbank Gamers variant rules, you need to get into a game of it. It is exciting and competitive. Please see for full details of the rules.
