My 9 and 11 year old are willing to learn/play anything. We play dominion, ascension, carcasonne, heroscape, ccgs, and others.

I want to find a miniture (war probably) game that would be good but not too crazy intense. The reality is that heroscape is good, except getting out the crate of pieces and terrain is a weekend not game night.

I like FFG so I have looked at Dust Tactics: Revised Core Set, but I don't know a thing about it.

so bgg'ers??

Battle Cry or Memoir '44 depending on the period of history they would enjoy the most.

Tide of Iron by Fantasy Flight Games.

HeroClix might be good too, though you may have issues with breakage.

battlecry, heroclix.. would be my go to games for this age range.

I suppose Memoir 44 might be fun as well.

I recommend Wings of War: Deluxe Set the revised delux set, if your boys like airplanes, the game includs four battle aircraft and not so hard to learn.

you may increase the difficulty with many optional rules, also design your own scenarios
