Is there a list of all the "Gotcha!" cards in the game? I'm referring to the cards by which a newbie, not intimately familiar with the game, would be caught off guard? Like Olympic games/Defcon2, or Romanian Abdication? I looked through the files and only found the Stategy Plan(n)er, which is overly comprehensive. I could, of course, trim that list down ... just wondering if I missed a file where someone else already did that?

Thanks!

There are too many to list, unfortunately. Basically every card has a "gotcha" moment.

Yes, a lot of cards let you place influence, or remove a few influence ... but relatively few totally undo what you've been working on. Right? For example, from the Strategic Planner spreadsheet, in the Early War Europe list:
7. Socialist Govts 3 EUROPE Western Europe -3 US inf. (2 per) USSR
10. Blockade* 1 EUROPE W.Germany Elim all US inf. (unless discard 3-card) USSR
12. Romanian Abdicat* 1 EUROPE Romania Elim all US inf., Sov +control USSR
14. Comecon* 3 EUROPE Eastern Europe +4 Sov inf. (1 per, non-US control) USSR
16. Warsaw Pact Formed* 3 EUROPE Eastern Europe +5 Sov inf. (2 per) or Elim all US inf (from 4) USSR
17. De Gaulle Leads Fr* 3 EUROPE France -2 US inf., +1 Sov inf. USSR
19. Truman Doctrine* 1 EUROPE All of Europe Elim all Sov inf. (One uncontrolled) USA
22. Independant Reds* 2 EUROPE Yug/Rom/Bul/Hun/Cze Add US inf. to match Sov inf. (one country) USA
23. Marshall Plan* 4 EUROPE Western Europe +1 US inf.. in 7 (1 per, non-Sov. control) USA
29. East European Unrst 3 EUROPE Eastern Europe Sov inf. -1 in 3 (1 per) USA
28. Suez Crisis* 3 EUR/MID France/UK -4 US inf. (max 2 per) USSR
21. NATO* 4 EUROPE All of Europe No coups/realignments of US-ctrl countries USA

I'd only include:
10. Blockade* 1 EUROPE W.Germany Elim all US inf. (unless discard 3-card) USSR
12. Romanian Abdicatn* 1 EUROPE Romania Elim all US inf., Sov +control USSR
17. De Gaulle Leads Fr* 3 EUROPE France -2 US inf., +1 Sov inf. USSR
19. Truman Doctrine* 1 EUROPE All of Europe Elim all Sov inf. (One uncontrolled) USA

I guess I'm almost looking for a list of cards that do more than just let you place/remove influence in a bunch of different areas -- basically, an ops card with higher point value but limited to specific locations. Mostly, I think, stuff that affects particular countries.

Maybe I'll just make my own list ...

Thanks!

I mean, your example exactly illustrates the difficulties. Warsaw Pact is important, but only in the Late War. Independent Reds is somewhat important, not enough to be a total gotcha but still something you have to watch out for (i.e., play it before Romanian Abdication is triggered). Socialist Governments is a headlnie gotcha. Suez Crisis is a T1 headline gotcha. And what about the Wars?

It's not just limited to eliminating influence. See, e.g., Ussuri, OAS Founded, OPEC, and Wargames, none of which eliminate influence but can all be characterized as "gotcha".

You can make a relatively short list of cards that wipe out all influence, which would be decent for a beginner.* And then maybe add the DEFCON death cards.** But you'll quickly realize that there's a lot more game-changing gotchas than just the wipe-out-influence cards, and trying to make a comprehensive list of every card that has a big impact on the game, and identifying under which situations they have such a big impact ... well, that's the whole point of the game.

I recommend reading through Phillip Thomas' analysis of every card. After digesting that you'll have a good appreciation of when to watch out for what cards.

* Off the top of my head:

Romanian Abdication
Blockade
US/Japan Mutual Defense Pact
Muslim Revolutions
Fidel
the Wars (sort of), including Brush War
Sadat Expels Soviets
The Iron Lady (lol)
Iranian Hostage Crisis
Ortega Elected in Nicaragua

Edward,

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the fact that the cards are the game. What I want, though, is a short list I can look at myself (I haven't played many games; and it's far enough in between games that I only remember a few of these cards) and give to my newbie opponent so we don't end the game prematurely. Something like what you suggested will, I think, be just right.

So thanks!
