At the end of each month, I write up the new-to-me games that month for Grimwold's geeklist, and copy them into the comments field for each of the games. I had 360 comments and 348 ratings, because I don't rate expansions.

The first question is skewed by my Smell rating, which shows as a comment, but is some games it might be the only comment. Plus, it will be on some games I haven't even rated/played yet.

I don't know if I really have a "favorite", but I think my comment on Troyes fairly accurately describes the game:

NateStraight wrote:
This is a stupid game... I'm not sure yet whether that's "good stupid" or "bad stupid".

Right now, perhaps something more descriptive like "ludicrous" would do the trick.

Hilarious mash-up of mechanics with very little semblance of cohesion, but it works.

Every player on their turn is doing something radically different [at least superficially].

258 games rated. 193 games commented on. Thought I was doing pretty well with comments, think I'll add a few more tonight. I like the idea of having comments for all games I've rated, even if it is "one game played, ok, probably won't play again".

My average, as I suspect most people's will be is in the 6s - 6.75. Loads of 7s which for me are "yeah nice game, not amazing though". There's a real width to my seven ratings though - just one number goes from nearly an 8 (great game) down to nearly a 6 (meh).

As for my favourite comment, ignoring The World Cup Game which is pretty much a list of which countries have won the tournaments I've played:

"Absolute Balderdash is probably my favourite party game. Great fun and has actually reduced myself and my father in law to tears of laughter so gotta be a winner.

Better than Dixit."

I've commented on about 98% of the games I've rated. I think the comments are pretty much the most useful feature at the site, so I try to contribute to them and I would encourage others to as well.

I don't have a favourite comment that I've written, but I do have a favourite game. Here's my comment for Fury of Dracula (second edition):

Despite a few relatively minor flaws, I have more fun playing this than pretty much any other board game. There's a great ebb-and-flow as Dracula manages to slip through the Hunters' fingers just as it looks like he's finished. Very thematic and, in my experience, lots of fun for both gamers and non-gamers.

I also have a soft spot for it since it was the game that convinced me to dive head first into this hobby.

12 I've commented on more than I've rated (203 vs. 155). I usually prefer to play a game at least twice before rating it, but will often leave comments right away - sometimes even before playing it.

13 7.42 (7.94 for expansions)
There really aren't very many games I've played that I would consider truly bad, since even the simple ones (like roll&move, etc.) usually have some redeeming value to them or are/were "good" in the right time and place. Plus, over the last several years I've been a lot more careful about researching games so the ones I do buy and/or play already tend to be games I know I'll enjoy beforehand.

14 8 noses just ahead of 9 and 7, although I rate most things to the nearest half point so some of those are actually 8.5 and there are some at 7.5 being counted lower.

4 My comments are mostly informative and explain my ratings, so none really jump out as favorites.

If I goof up a game or don't think I have a good feel for it, I'll give my impressions in the comments but not yet rate it. Also, if I owned a game then got rid of it without ever getting it to the table, I'll leave in my comments why... Again without rating it.

So thus >100% comments.

1 This was almost ten percent because I don't always think to comment on games I don't own. I'll fix that someday.

2 Almost 60 percent of my ratings are 6 or 7.

3 6

4 I didn't have any comments I was overly proud of, but I took this opportunity to punch up one of my comments.

New Apples to Apples comment wrote:
Apples to Apples: Green Card: Apples to Apples. Red Cards: Banana Pudding; A-Rod; Al Capone. I'd choose A-Rod because they're both over-rated.

I never rate games.

I play games to have fun with my family and friends, not assign some arbitrary number based on how much I enjoy them. It's just not something that interests me. I have commented on games that I like, and submitted both reviews and sessions reports.

I *do* have a top-ten list on my home page, but I see no point in trying to turn that into ratings for those games.

963 games commented, 992 games rated - so 97%

My average rating is 5.33 and my most common rating is a 5, so I'm pretty harsh.

I try to give a comment whenever I rate a game, if nothing else to help me remember! Odd 3% are likely to be games I rated a while ago.

My ratings aren't static though, nor are my commments, if I play a game again I'll usually review my rating and also add an update to my comments - for example Carcassonne: The Castle liked it a lot when I first got it, then it slipped a bit, then got traded, then I traded it back (as a sweetner in a maths trade) and played it again ...

Quote:
Best carcassone version - possibly it's just a better game 2 player, but I think the boundry helps, and I like the bonuses on the wall/scoring track to collect.

* Update Was my favourite Carcassone version but it's only 2 player and with the release of Carcassonne die Stadt it just isn't getting played anymore. When I'm in a position to play Carcassone:The Castle, Carcassonne die Stadt gets played instead. Maybe I'll get burned out on the new one and come back to this.

** Update, nope, played the Castle again and we're both in agreement we prefer die Stadt, Castle traded

*** Update, and now ended up with it again following a maths trade. Need to play it again to see if it's worth keeping.

**** Update, played with my son, and he likes it - so for now it's off the trade pile.

Is this my 'best' or 'favourite' comment? Don't know - shrug - I don't really have an opinion. I make the comments I make about a game because that's how I'm feeling about it at the time, but this is a good example of me updating my comment (and rating) over time.

Great idea for a poll, and a great way for me to find some new geekbuddies - the comments really help when I'm looking at a game

I've actually commented on more games than I've rated This seems to be fairly common according to the results so far.

I write comments for a game after one play, so I've commented on 374 games. However, I don't typically rate a game until after at least 2 plays, so I've rated 295 games.

None of my comments are too exciting so I'm not sure I have any "favorites." However, the gist of this comment on The Inventors is repeated in a few different oldies...

Well, I'll pick one positive and one negative comment:

Negative (for Devil Bunny Needs a Ham):
Quote:
Silly, pointless, but not as much as it's sequel.

Positive (Die Macher):
Quote:
I waited - oh, 10 years to get this to the table. I shouldn't have waited that long. Fun game! It is long, and does take at least one play through to both understand the round mechanics (well, one or two rounds for that), and the scoring. But, the spiteful poll auction tension made me giggle.

Interesting to see how high my average ratings are. I try not to play/buy games that I don't research the reviews on (and not rate games I haven't played "enough"), so I'd like to think it's because I don't buy games I wouldn't be willing to play all the time.

I should probably be rating things more in light of "would I play this more or less than others in my collection?"

d10-1 I'm at 100%. Right now I have 3 uncommented but I just haven't had time this week to write them up.

d10-2 6.22, which I'd thought was going to be a bit higher, because...

d10-3 ...my most frequent rating is a 7.

d10-4 My favorite comments are those for the games I really don't like very much or were games we tolerated as kids. To whit:

On Quizzard - "Imagine you had Jeopardy! buzzers in your own home. That's pretty much it."

On Twister - "Twister is less of a game and more of a get-to-know you technique."

On The Game of Authors - "It's Go Fish. With authors."

On War - "War is what you play when you can't think of what else to play."

501 comments, 532 ratings. Periodically I go add ratings to games I have played but not rated, then go add comments to the batch too. Usually on a lazy weekend day when I have extra time.

I used to rate and commnent as I logged my plays, likely I'll go back to that. I try to add the date of the comment and add # of plays and at what player count in case I actually more than a handful of plays of the game and want to add more to my initial impression. I really appreciate many of my geekbuddies who go into great depth on their comments - kind of like mini-reviews.

My average rating is 7.01 and I am starting to rate games a little harsher, but I still see myself using 4 or 5 as the low rating I would use on the BGG scale.

One comment of note I had for the game 25 Words or Less was "Pretty fun word party game. Like the humming option."

For Nexus Ops:

Quote:
Me: Wanna play a really cool game on an alien planet, with all sorts of day-glo alien creatures?

Her: So, let me get this straight... You’re playing the part of a huge galactic corporation that’s stealing precious resources from the planet’s natives?

Me: Well, I guess, at least you’re a representative of the corporation. And see these neat red nuggets I bought to use as rubium, instead of those boring old chits?

Her (not distracted at all by the shiny red jewels): And you’re killing the indigenous creatures?

Me: Yeah, but only those that are allied with the other corporations…

Her: That’s just wrong! No way am I playing THAT game!

Epilogue: My SO is now my ex. But it wasn’t because of Nexus Ops! I swear! :-)

2) Average rating is 6.13. I play a lot of games I'm not enthralled with.
3) The rating I most often give is 7.

I don't have a favorite witty comment, but I like it when I have time to fit a mini-review into the comments space, like I did for Supernova or Macao.

1 - I'm currently at 95.84%. I'm falling behind slightly on these. I used to comment on games as soon as my New to You entry was posted and my opinions were out there already. Now I'm playing catch-up.

2 - Looks like I'm just slightly more critical than the majority of you (or I've just been subjected to more bad games.) Currently I'm at 5.80 for an Average Rating.

3 - My ratings work out to be a nice curve. Currently the top point of that curve lies in the 6s.

4 - Venting frustration is always more fun to me. Somehow the negative hyperbole flows so much easier than the positive stuff. Here's a fun one from The Bob Evans Restaurant Family Game!:

Quote:
If you're reading this comment because you are standing in a Bob Evans Restaurant and looking at this game that you never knew existed...Run, don't walk, out of there now! My $7 would have been better utilized if I'd just given an extra large tip for lunch. This game contains ZERO decisions. If you're familiar with LCR, it's like that but with a more fiddly card-flipping and addition mechanic that makes me hate it even more.

Let's put it this way, when you deal the cards at the beginning of the game if one player is lucky enough to get both 50 point cards they win instantly! Yes, you can win this game before anyone has even taken a turn. You don't even need players for this game. It plays itself, and you are just the machinery that are running the engine.
