I've turned over a set of new Optional Rules to Dan and he said he would get them posted to the DVG website next week.

The optional rules, with a brief description, in the new set are:

-Additional damage checks for U-Boats (when a U-boat first becomes Unfit there is a chance it will be sunk and any U-Boat that has 2 times its maximum Shaken Stress Points is sunk).

- Special Mission Attack change limiting the number of torpedoes fired to the number of Ready torpedoes, but allowing to reload tubes by redrawing Event Cards

- A Day and Night Attack that determines if the contact was sighted during day or night. If the contact is found during the day a U-Boat can try to track it until night, but might get extra Stress Points.

- Variable Escort Placement provides a chance Escorts in the Short Range area will be in a different location after setup.

- Diving Limit during Combat Resolution, once a U-Boat dives it cannot surface for the rest of the Combat Resolution Phase.

- More Aggressive Escort, if there is a damaged ship on the Tactical Display, but no U-Boats are detected, Escorts that would not have moved will move toward damaged ships.

- Tougher Torpedo Spread, a U-Boat only rolls once for each torpedo spread (instead of rolling for each torpedo).

- Battleship Toughness, Battleships ignore the first light or heavy damage counter.

- Crash Dive attack limitation, only Veteran and Ace U-Boats can attack if they Crash Dive.

- Deep Dive Damage, if a U-Boat is using Deep Dive and adds Stress Points from an attack, the number of stress points added is doubled.

I would like to suggest a rule that escorts that have detected a boat will always stay "on top" of the sub. This would eliminate submerged boats "outrunning" speed 2 escorts in a speed 2 or 3 convoy.

Further, I suggest that boats that Deep Dive on the previous turn get a bonus to the Silent Running Evade check. This might change the timing of marker removal, however.

Thanks for working to tweak the game, and make it even better!

One thing I would suggest you try is locking the U-Boat's speed during Lag Movement.

Example: If a submerged sub moved 1 during U-Boat movement, it is speed 1 for Lag Movement (it cannot go to speed 0).

That should limit most of the speed distortion. The slower escorts will still have trouble keeping up with a surfaced U-Boat and submerged U-Boats still have a chance to sneak away.

I'll have to take care of that sometime. It isn't something I've been too worried about, since most of the stuff I've done has a limited audience.

I'll pass the word along to Dan. He might be waiting for me to finish up the stats for the American Escorts for the Operation Drumbeat campaign.
