What would a list of the world's most played boardgames look like? How far down the list would you have to go to find a bgg staple?

Let's limit it to games played by adults.

I'd offer the following as a starting point

Backgammon
Chess
Scrabble
Mah Jong
Monopoly
Warhammer 40k

What else?

According to its box, the answer is Tichu. I'll go with the box; why would they lie?

What is the most played boardgame, globally, in the bgg top 100. It must be either Catan or Carcassonne...

I am hoping that was a rhetorical question that leads to enlightenment this holiday season.

In my experience, if an individual has played just one designer board-game in his/her life, it's probably been Settlers.

As for classic games; Monopoly, Cluedo, Uno, the list goes on.

I'd likely add Tic Tac Toe to that list.

No one likes it but you can play it with something to write on and a writing utensil.

I'd offer up checkers, snakes & ladders and darts (if one considers it a board game, of course!).

Not a chance.

Go is sitting at 41.

I forgot about Go - it must be up there. Apparently Settlers of Catan has sold more than 15 million copies http://www.wired.com/gaming/gamingreviews/magazine/17-04/mf_... - Go may be popular in parts of Asia - 27 million players according to wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game)

but Go is a 2 player game, Settlers 3-6 players. So each copy of Settlers supports more players than Go does.

I reckon number of plays will be of a similar order of magnitude.

Warhammer has sold in the millions, although probably the majority of the games are not played by adults, so would be excluded...

Snakes & ladders is likewise excluded.

Darts - that's getting tricky - if darts is allowed, why not bowling, or even javelin, shot put...

Well, I mention darts because it is a strategy and dexterity game, and there is a board involved, which is more than Jenga or Loopin' Louie can say. Of course it's tricky, but a case can be made for it.

This got me thinking- I wonder which specific copies of said games have gotten the most plays? And if there is even a way to make estimations on that.

For example- Is there a copy of a specific Go board at a Go temple (or museum, whatever) still in daily use that has been used for a couple hundred years or more?

Depends how we count this. Magic is played by thousands of people every day and games only take minutes. Currently, there is a HUGE tourney going on almost every weekend where in just that one place close to 10,000 games happen.
