Holy Cow! This could be scary. His third son was being groomed as his successor, but there may be some in NK who disagree, leading to a power struggle in this paranoid nuclear armed country

Should I cancel my order for Next War: Korea until we see what happens?

It was his youngest son who is/was being groomed to secede him. The problem is the guy is in his 20s and there are likely a lot of people entrenched in the power structure for decades who aren't going to want to suck up to some guy young enough to be their son. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

This thread is headed to RSP faster than a DPRK T-72 knock-off blasting through the DMZ near Kaesong.

Perhaps all of the Korean people will soon be free.

"Soon" potentially meaning after a civil war/power struggle enables civilian population to revolt & demand democracy.

Not sure that that's what your Nth Korean in the Street really wants...

Consider that the first shot across the newly-minted DMZ.

It's kinda "funna", that when your country's leader dies, your neighbour raises his military awareness, instead of sending a postcard with condolences.surprise

Other thing I read, which kinda sums it up.
"if North-Korea was a normal country, this would be the time for a NK-spring, but NK is no normal country".

We will have to wait and see.

Can I get a DEFCON 3 please?

Cheers, Haring

Wendell hasn't posted. Is that significant? At least he died peacefully and not after being rumped by an angry gun toting mob like his Libyan buddy. One more angel in heaven, one more star in the sky..

Not to mention his coaching of North Korea's world cup team to a win over Brazil in the 2010 World Cup. You don't remember that? You would if you lived in North Korea. Their coach claimed that he was getting coaching advice from Kim Jong via an invisible cell phone during the matches. When the team got blown out of the tournament the government re-edited their 2-1 loss versus Brazil. They cut out the Brazilian scores and broadcast it with the final outcome being a 1-0 North Korean victory.

Because North Korean citizens generally aren't allowed to leave the country North Korea also hired 1,000 Chinese to be North Korean fans in the stands for the World Cup. The fake North Korean fans were so well known that the result was one of my favorite sports signs of all time.

No!

No avatar changes planned. My avatar is more a tribute to the foul-mouthed humor of Team America (fuck yeah) than a commemoration of a nasty and dangerous little dictator.

Though I cannot bring myself to celebrate any death, the demise of Kim Jong-Il does not exactly bring tears to my eyes.

Though it does make me worry more than usual about the stability of North Korea. Can the "Dear Successor" (the pudgy young Kim) keep it together? Or does some other party figure make a play for power?
