That is the exact same variant i've been toying with. I haven't tried it out yet. I have the U-Boat down as a Lag=0 (i.e. It doesn't move during the lag phase), but the Merchant ships move forward on the Tactical display. Undamaged merchant ships move two areas foerward, lightly damaged ships move one area forward, and heavily damaged ships don't move. Escorts don't move.

The only tricky part is if the U-boat is already in front of the merchant ships. They obviously wouldn't move into the U-boat. So i have the U-boat and escorts rotate 2 spaces to the side to simulate a convoy direction change.

Like I said, I haven't tried it yet, but could be interesting.

That's a good suggestion. There might need to be a turn limit to how long the escorts will stay over the U-boat, after the merchants have "lagged" off the board.

I had proposed that an escort over a detected boat would simply move to re-cover it during the escort movement phase. Your variant would retain more tactical movement choices.

The boats would need a boost to the SR evade roll, I think, which was almost useless over the course of a long campaign. I would like to see a +2 bonus to SR for a boat that deep dived the previous turn.

The board seems too small to boost the escort speeds, it might need an extra ring if that happened.

If I'm detected and have escort ships over me, i'm usually in Deep Dive and heading towards the edge ASAP. I've been pretty lucky when rolling twice on escort attacks. Of course, with this variant, the U-boat has to move one area at a time, taking more attacks as it moves.

I agree with you on the SR evade roll. I haven't been using it because I typically lag away from the Escorts and usually off the display after a turn. There probably should be a bonus if using this variant... +2 seems reasonable.

Updated Variant with better picture and +2 Evasion bonus for Silent Running as suggested by Ryan Pelkey.

Wow... that's a lot of 4's. A Detected U-boat is in a world of hurt with those speeds.

I am getting Das Boot for Christmas... the 5 hour version. Can't wait to see it. I heard it's pretty good, and intense.

I used PowerPoint to build the picture and the Variant description (use it all the time at work). Took a while to get the Tactical Display outline correct.

I want to post my new log sheets and variants... but i'm still futzing with them. It takes days to get a file upload approved, which is why i'm just adding pictures to my posts.

I like the idea. The threat of being pinned down and unable to get away from escorts isn't something I've really had to deal with as is.
