I voted "only in the song" since, while I'm certainly familiar with Shit Creek, or "the Creek" as the bowdlerized version goes, the "turd for a paddle" addenda is unique to the song in my experience.

I only heard the phrase "Up shit creek without a paddle". I think the Ween lyric is an original.

As far as the song, I have the CD and the 45 (on yellow vinyl!):

My dad used to use that expression a lot. He was 71 when he died back in 1999. Pretty sure he had no clue who Ween was.

"Piss it against the wall" and "rub salt" were other favourites of his.

Interesting. He actually used the "with a turd for a paddle" portion of the expression? All internet searches attempted by the esteemed RSP Founder in question failed to produce evidence of the expression pre-Ween. I am merely the vessel for this inquiry, and have no actual stake in its conclusions....

My mistake. I read the question as "this song's title" not "this poll's title."

I don't recall him using the "turd for a paddle" line. "Without a paddle," absolutely.

Look, this is RSP. Are you really so repressed in here that you can't actually put the "i" in "shit?" We shouldn't all be required to implement symbolic substitution in order to parse your jokes. What is it about a slang term for fecal matter that is so horrific to you that you can't bring yourself to fully specify it using the regular alphabet? Do you honestly believe that you are less sullied by disguising the term? You clearly know the word that you are attempting to mask, so you've lost all sorts cachet with the Rectitude League of The United Kingdom (not to mention The 700 Club and various super-secret Muslim organizations), so why get all cagey with it? I can understand if you didn't want to spell out "fuck," "felch," "bandersnatch," "cylon," or "kaleidoscope," but what has poor old "shit" ever done to you, other than pop out of your bottom?

I reiterate: This is RSP. If the worst thing a kid is going to "view" in here is the word "shit" then more power to 'em.
