Am I the only one to find this quite disturbing (and almost laughable)?

I realize they have to cry unless they wan't to spend the next 10 years in a penal camp but still...

I don't think the mentality of a person raised in North Korea is easily understood by a person who who was raised elsewhere.

I'd like to call them nutty, but truth is I feel sorry for (most of) them.

Not to get all post-modern up in here, but exactly. They don't share the same metanarrative as the rest of us. They think the rest of the world is filled with terrible monsters that will destroy them, and the one guy who could protect them from this terrible world just died. I think it's genuine grief. And I don't find it sad, I find it terrifying. What sort of lies have I bought into as part of my metanarrative?

I thought the ones on their hands and knees with their heads on the ground had the best technique. You wouldn't have to worry about getting your tears or face right and it wouldn't take a lot of effort. You can just pound the ground randomly to seal the look.

I will file info this away should I ever need to fake grief for cameras.

Not an exact quote, but I thought the AP write-up was interesting. "The legend of his birth is that he was born in 1942 on a sacred Korean mountain, and rainbows and a new star heralded the event. According to Soviet records, however, he was born in Siberia in 1941."

The way North Koreans view Kim Jong-il isn't really the same as say the way Cubans see Castro. Their political philosophy is a lot closer to a religion. A State of Mind is a good documentary if you are interested. It follows a couple of North Korean gymnasts preparing for a national performance.

Public mourning was mandatory when Kim Il-Sung died and I imagine the same thing is happening here (although perhaps with a few more sceptics this time). Then, people cried because they had to or they would face recriminations. I read a story of one man who realised his life depended on being able to cry along with everyone else and the only way he could do it was by staring directly into the sun until his eyes watered. Another little girl spat in her hands and rubbed them onto her face to create the desired effect. Perhaps the same techniques are being used today.

Call me suspicious, but these days whenever I see a picture or video, my first thought is "is this actually a picture of that event or just some old stock image dug up from who knows where"? These days, I totally dismiss most things I see on the "news".

On Netflix, Vice Magazine Travel has an episode where they went to North Korea. Rumor has it, Kim Jong-Il had a collection of scrimshaw dildos.

Nooooo!!! I wonder if it's too late to get to North Korea.

I'm running out of chances to embalm a communist leader. A communist leader would give me the ultimate bragging rights at the embalmers association.

He had a collection of almost everything. There are two massive palaces north of Pyongyang entiely devoted to displaying the gifts given to him and his parents by foreign heads of state. They wouldn't let us take photos but there was an awesome stuffed crocodile standing upright, arms outstretched, holding a tray of drinks! Completely ridiculous. It might have been from Robert Mugabe (many of the gifts were).
