I'm developing a PvP Lovecraftian board game that is very thematic and pits cultists against one another. I'm at the point where I need a good, gripping name for it. I've been going with "Blasphemous" for now, but that's just not good enough. Any ideas? Thank you!

You're suggesting "Necronomicon" as the game's name, then? As the Necronomicon is only a mere item in the game, I probably won't go that route. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Cult Supremacy
Texas Hold em down while I get my dagger
Darker Devotion (as in, my devotion is darker than yours)

Keep this in mind:
"The time would be easy to know, for then mankind would have become as the Great Old Ones; free and wild and beyond good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men shouting and killing and revelling in joy. Then the liberated Old Ones would teach them new ways to shout and kill and revel and enjoy themselves, and all the earth would flame with a holocaust of ecstasy and freedom." (HPL, The Call of Cthulhu)

Accordingly: "Free and Wild", or "Beyond Good and Evil", or "Shout and Kill and Revel".

Ohh, that's the one: "Shout and Kill and Revel". I'll playtest...

Thanks for all the replies. I'd like the theme to come through in the title if at all possible. Rise of Cthulhu, Rituals of Cthulhu, Return of the Old Ones, etc. are closer to what I want

Yes, it is now - sufficient time has passed.

That's why there are so many Cthluhu themed games popping up these days

Yes. If you mean public property, no rights reserved. Yes. Just search Cthulhu, Arkham, Unspeakable, Elder Sign, etc. and see all the games by all different companies that come up.

As far as I know, it was never private property. Lovecraft never sought any rights over Cthulhu or any of his creations.

The law says that they were his, whether he sought them or not. They were his ideas and he had a right to them. Whether he ever sought to enforce those rights is another matter.

Just because I leave my front door unlocked doesn't mean I don't own the property in my house.

Not that it matters anymore.

Unaussprechlichen Kulten is a great suggestion, and the English subtitle would certainly help the Lovecraft-impaired to follow along. Since the OP seems to want "of Cthulhu" or "Old Ones" in the title, How about Unaussprechlichen Kulten: Cults of Cthulhu?

The magic date for US copyright, by the way, is 1923. Anything published before (or I think in but I could be wrong) 1923 is now in public domain.
Everything After 1923 has had it's copyright extended, perpetually, over and over again, by congress. Oh, also, a copyright must be extended every 28 years (apparently?) by the current right holder

This is because, primarily, Disney is pouring BILLIONS of dollars a year into the pockets of congressmen, JUST TO KEEP GETTING COPYRIGHT EXTENDED, because they are TERRIFIED of the prospect of losing Mickey Mouse, et al, to public domain.

Anyway, with the exception of a few stories published by others after his death, most of the mythos works were published before '23, and it doesn't appear anyone managed to claim rights on the rest and renew copyright on those published AFTER '23.

This is also why the first FIVE books of Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars (Barsoom) series are in public domain, but the rest are NOT.

THAT SAID

I personally like and have to second (well third) the idea of calling the game Unaussprechlichen Kulten, subtitled "Unspeakable Cults".

It's gotta be the 2nd or 3rd most mentioned Evil Tome in the entire mythos, and it totally fits the theme of the game as far as I can see.

You don't own Cthulu. Cthulu owns you.

I liked the "Darker Devotion" suggestion. Even if it is not the title it could be a tag line or part of the blurb: "Strange Cults battle it out to see who has the darker devotion".

I guess I should put my own suggestion here instead of trying to steal someone elses....

Forbidden Knowledge

Or just use the title of a HP Lovecraft story.

What the Moon Brings
The Lurking Fear

As a final piece of unqualified advice: Don't use the word Cthulu in the title. There are already enough games with that title; "I'm Cthulu and so is my wife!"

You would be correct had IP law existed when he wrote them. When it came into play, he did not seek control over the properties, but instead encouraged friends to use them as they saw fit. Then he promptly thereafter died.
