As a suggestion that changes nothing else about the way the game is played but is a simple, handicapping tweak to meet the (seemingly) overwhelming offensive power of the British player, what about simply adding 1 additional strength point to the singleton, free French Regular Infantry card that the French player starts the game with?

There's no need to worry about marking cards, it's already unique: solid blue border and has no cost symbol.

It can still be Ambushed away—and might force an interesting decision on the French player if they lose it in a Siege or Ambush.

But it's still a card that now does something other than what it says on it. While I don't speak for Martin, I have a guess it's not the sort of thing he would want to do.

Just something folks might want to try until Martin presents something official.
